Baahubali's National Award: Bollywood Supports Film's Win Amid Criticism

March 30, 2016

Mumbai, Mar 30: Filmmakers including Hansal Mehta, Remo D'Souza and Ronnie Lahiri have supported the jury's decision of honouring Baahubali with the Best Feature Film National Award after Chauthi Koot director Gurvinder Singh questioned its win.

BaahubaliS S Rajamouli's multilingual magnum opus Baahubali was the only film to win in the top category as Bollywood dominated the list of awards announced on Monday.

Mr Singh, whose film won the Best Punjabi film National Award, had said, "Not only me, everybody is saying the decisions are not correct. Baahubali is perhaps the worst film ever to have got a National Award. And that too the Best Feature Film."

But not everybody shares the opinion.

When contacted Hansal Mehta told PTI: "Awards are decided by jury. People who are not part of it are bound to have their own opinions but I think the jury has given its best. My personal opinion does not matter but I think the jury has been fair."

The Aligarh director also feels that Bollywood has not been given any preference at the 63rd National Award.

"I find this argument that National Awards have been Bollywoodised lop-sided. Last year, Bengali films were big winners but no one questioned that. But this time, people are saying regional cinema was ignored," he said.

ABCD 2 director Remo D'Souza, who won his debut National Award for Best Choreography in Bajirao Mastani, said, "It's a brilliant film. I have watched it. It completely deserves the best feature film honour. We should not question jury's decision as they are eminent."

Ronnie Lahiri, whose film Piku gave Amaitabh Bachchan his fourth best actor National Award, said that Baahubali won mainly due to its hype.

"As a producer, Piku did not win in the Best Feature Film category as we were expecting. But I can't question the jury as it has given awards to Mr Bachchan and our writer Juhi Chaturvedi. There was a lot of buzz around Baahubali before its release, so may be that helped."

Baahubali: The Beginning, starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah Bhatia and Anushka Shetty, released on July 10.

The film also won the National Award for Best Special Effects.

New Delhi, Jan 9: A Delhi court Thursday directed the makers of the Deepika Padukone starer feature film 'Chhapaak' to give credit to acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal’s lawyer in the movie.

Additional Civil Judge Pankaj Sharma said it was necessary that advocate Aparna Bhat's contribution is acknowledged.

"This Court is of the considered view that facts are indicative that the plea of the plaintiff for interim injunction is well-founded and it is necessary that her contribution be acknowledged by providing on the slide on the actual footage and the images, the line 'Aparna Bhat continues to fight the cases of sexual and physical violence against women' during the screening of the film.

"The said line on screen maybe with a rider that the same is with the court order," the judge said.

Advocate Bhat filed the application saying that despite representing Agarwal in courts for several years and helping in the movie-making, she was not given credit in the movie.

She said the filmmakers took her help in the entire process of writing and shooting the movie, but did not give the credit.

Mumbai, Jun 9: Actor Sonu Sood, who has been arranging transport for migrant workers stranded in Mumbai and has faced criticism from the Shiv Sena for "enacting a political script written by BJP", was stopped outside the Bandra Terminus in Mumbai by police from meeting labourers.

A Mumbai Police official said the actor was stopped by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) when he reached the station on Monday night to meet some labourers, and added that they have not received any complaint so far in this connection.

The migrant labourers were supposed to take the Shramik Special train from Bandra Terminus to Uttar Pradesh.

Mumbai's Nirmal Nagar police station's senior inspector Shashikant Bhandare told news agency PTI that "The actor was stopped by the RPF, not by us. He wanted to meet labourers who were going to their native place. We have not received any complaint regarding this till now."

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday wondered whether the BJP propped up Sonu Sood to "offer help" to migrant workers from north India stranded in Maharashtra amidst the lockdown, with the political motive to show the Uddhav Thackeray government in poor light.

In his weekly column 'Rokhthok' in Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', Sanjay Raut questioned the sudden rise of "Mahatma" Sood on the social scene of Maharashtra during the lockdown.

Mr Raut also referred to an alleged "sting operation" against Sonu Sood ahead of the 2019 general elections, saying he had agreed to promote the BJP-led government at various platforms through his official social media accounts.

However, later that day Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray lauded Sonu Sood's initiative to arrange buses for stranded migrant workers.

The actor met Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's residence 'Matoshree' in suburban Bandra on Sunday night.

On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh backed Sonu Sood for his work for stranded migrant workers, and questioned the Maharashtra government's criticism of the actor.

Indore, Jan 14: Yoga guru Ramdev has said that Deepika Padukone should hire persons like him for offering correct advice, days after the actress had visited Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi following the violence at the campus earlier this month.

"Deepika Padukone needs to study about political, social and cultural issues. She should understand more about our country. Only after gaining knowledge, she should take decisions. I feel she should have persons like Swami Ramdev for correct advice," Ramdev said at an event here on Monday.

On January 7, Padukone joined the protest at JNU after a masked mob entered the varsity campus and attacked the students and teachers with sticks and rods on January 5.

Several BJP leaders questioned the support extended by Padukone. On the other hand, the Congress threw their weight behind the actress for her stand.
