Babri mosque land belongs to us, claim Buddhists

A group of Buddhists have filed a petition before the Supreme Court claiming that the land of historic Babri Masjid which was demolished by the saffron extremists in 1992 is actually a Buddhist site.

The fresh petition says the claim is based on the four excavations carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India at the disputed site, with the last one being held in 2002-2003 on the orders of Allahabad high court’s Lucknow bench.

The petition, registered by the SC on March 6 has been filed by a Buddhist, Vineet Kumar Maurya, who is a resident of Ayodhya. It has been filed as a civil suit under article 32 (read with articles 25, 26 and 29) of the Constitution on behalf of members of the Buddhist society “who are practising and living their lives according to the principles of Lord Buddha and have an inner urge to see that all the issues having significance to the Buddhist religion may be adjudicated in a fair, impartial manner”.

The petition claims that there was a structure relating to the Buddhist religion at the site before Babri mosque was constructed there.

“The ASI excavation revealed the existence of stupas, circular stupas, walls and pillars which are distinctive features of a Buddha Vihar,” said Maurya in the petition.

“No ruins of any temple or any Hindu structure surfaced in the 50 trenches that had been excavated,” claimed Maurya. He added that the petition has appealed to the SC to declare “the disputed site as a Buddha Vihar like Shravasti, Kapilvastu, Kushinagar, Sarnath”.

New Delhi, Jul 22: With a spike of 37,724 cases and 648 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of COVID-19 cases in India stands at 11,92,915, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of cases includes 4,11,133 active cases, 7,53,050 cured/discharged/migrated and 28,732 deaths, the Health Ministry informed.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state with 3,27,031 cases and 12,276 deaths.
The second worst-hit state, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,80,643 COVID-19 cases so far while Delhi has reported 1,25,096 cases, according to the Ministry.

Other states that have witnessed a higher number of COVID-19 positive cases include, Andhra Pradesh with 58,668 cases, Karnataka with 71,069 while Telangana has reported 47,705 COVID-19 positive cases.

Meanwhile, as per the information provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of samples tested up to July 21 is 1,47,24, 546 including 3,43,243 samples tested yesterday.

Ayodhya, Feb 18: A senior Supreme Court lawyer has written to the Ram temple trust on behalf of a group of Muslims in Ayodhya, asking that five acres of land around the demolished Babri Masjid where a graveyard is situated be spared for the sake of 'sanatan dharma'.

The letter, written by advocate M R Shamshad, is addressed to all 10 trustees of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra.

Shamshad said according to Muslims, there is a graveyard known as 'Ganj Shahidan' around the demolished Babri Masjid where 75 Muslims who lost their lives in the 1885 riots in Ayodhya were buried.

"There is a mention of this in Faizabad Gazetteer also," he said.

"The central government has not considered the issue not using the grave-yard of Muslims for constructing the grand temple of Lord Ram. It has violated 'dharma'," the letter stated.

"In view of religious scriptures of 'sanatan dharma', you need to consider whether the temple of Lord Ram can have foundation on the graves of Muslims? This is a decision that the management of the trust has to take," it said.

"With all humility and respect to Lord Ram, I request you, not to use the land of about four to five acres in which the graves of Muslims are there around the demolished mosque," the letter added.

New Delhi, Aug 7: India's COVID-19 cases tally crossed 20 lakh mark with the highest single-day spike of 62,538 cases on Friday, said Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The COVID-19 tally rises to 20,27,075 including 6,07,384 active cases, 13,78,106 cured/discharged/migrated and 41,585 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Maharashtra with 1,46,268 active cases and 3,05,521 cured and discharged patients continues to be the worst affected. The state has also reported 16,476 deaths due to the infection.

Tamil Nadu has 54,184 active cases while 2,14,815 patients have been discharged after treatment in the state. 4,461 deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in the state.

Andhra Pradesh with 80,426 active cases is the third on the list. There are 1,04,354 cured and discharged patients and 1,681 deaths reported from the state.

Delhi now has 10,072 active cases and 1,26,116 cured and discharged patients. 4,044 people have lost their lives due to the disease in the Union Territory so far.
