Mumbai, Nov 28: Thousands of backward class Muslims on Wednesday picketed the historic Azad Maidan, demanding reservations in spheres like education, jobs and housing sectors, as available to other such communities in the country.
The demonstration saw the participation of several political parties, including the Awami Vikas Party (AVP), Samajwadi Party and the Nationalist Congress Party.
They argued that their community’s backwardness stems from their almost insignificant representation in various elected and statutory bodies, accompanied by the fact that Muslims make up only 14 percent of the Indian population.
AVP chief Shamsher Khan Pathan in his address pointed out that in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, only 28 seats in Parliament, a mere five percent of its strength, were won by Muslims.
