Bajirao Peshwa's Glorious History Languishing in State Apathy

December 20, 2015

Mumbai, Dec 20: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s fictional Bollywood epic Bajirao Mastani might have generated curiosity about the great prime minister of the Maratha kingdom, but the Peshwa’s real history is not known to many, thanks to the government’s apathy in showcasing his full glory and true history.

BajiraoAccording to Pune historian Mandar Lawate, nearly four crore manuscripts, letters and other ancient documents written in Modi Lipi (ancient cursive form of Marathi script) dating back to the reign of Bajirao Peshwa are languishing in his seat of power Shanivarwada in the heart of Pune.

“During their reign, the British had preserved these documents at Shanivarwada. Only Maratha history between 1630 and 1680 AD (reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) is known to the outside world. The rest has been treated as less important by the government,” Lawate said.

The Modi Lipi documents describe the history of the Peshwas, their conquests and narrate how Bajirao won all the 40 battles he fought. They also explain how his marriage to his second wife Mastani was a part of a political alignment between Marathas and Mastani’s father, King Chhatrasal.

“As there are very few people who can decode Modi Lipi, the true history of the expansion of the Maratha empire is largely unknown,” Lawate said.

Vishwas Patil, the national award-winning author of books Panipat and Mahanayak, said that the government’s apathy has deprived the new generation of knowing real Maratha history. “Mastani’s mother was believed to be Iranian. Traces of her roots can be found in the letters she wrote to Nanaji Peshwa after the latter coroneted her nephew to the throne of Banda in Madhya Pradesh. These letters should be made public,” Patil said.

He adds that Mastani’s dignity and character can be known from the letters. “Mastani and Kashibai (Bajirao’s first wife) never came face to face. I am sure Mastani would have bowed and touched Kashibai’s feet, she was that dignified in her upbringing,” he said.

About the movie Bajirao Mastani, he said: “The problem with our producers and directors is that they do not do thorough research, are not aware of history and lack confidence. Sir Richard Attenborough made Gandhi, but he did not twist historical facts.”

In a cameo appearance, the 62-year-old actor will essay the role of a police inspector in "Baaghi 3", producer Sajid Nadiadwala said.

"Everyone has been waiting to see Tiger team up with his 'Hero' father Jackie since we launched him. There have been plenty of speculations and no one has been able to bring them together in the last six years as the duo was categorical they would only share the screen when a film and role merited their presence.

"Ahmed and I feel the story line required Jackie to be a part of them film and I believe our visions matched to understand how it's a pivotal role in the film," Nadiadwala said in a statement.

The producer said having Jackie on board will add to the film's expectations.

"... I am confident no one will be disappointed by this double dose of Shroffs and will stand as a strong USP," Nadiadwala added.

Jackie started shooting for the film on Wednesday.

Also starring Shraddha Kapoor and Ankita Lokhande, "Baagi 3" is scheduled to be released on March 6.

Washington D.C., Jan 16: Barbara Broccoli, who has since long been the producer of the James Bond franchise, recently clarified in an interview that the 007 character won't be played by a woman in the forthcoming rendition.

Broccoli, accompanied by her half brother and fellow producer Michael G. Wilson, told Variety: "He can be of any color, but he is male."

She went on to say: "I believe we should be creating new characters for women -- strong female characters. I'm not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that."

According to Fox News, the current Bond hero, Daniel Craig, announced last November that he would cease to play the legendary character once he is done with the upcoming 'No Time To Die' movie that is scheduled for release in coming April.

Commenting on Daniel parting ways with the franchise, Broccoli said: "I'm in total denial. I've accepted what Daniel has said, but I'm still in denial. It's too traumatic for me."

Fox News reported last July that the British Actress Lashana Lynch could possibly star in the 2020 Bond flick, but such speculations were dispelled once the trailer for the movie was brought out last December.
