Bangladesh cancels downlink permission of Peace TV

Dhaka, Jul 11: Bangladesh today scrapped the downlink permission for 'Peace TV' of Indian Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik, a day after it banned the channel following bizarre allegations that his speeches inspired some of the militants who carried out the country's worst terror attack at a cafe here. The Information Ministry issued the order to cancel the Peace TV's downlink permission needed to broadcast in the country.

"Based on the Cabinet committee's decision, free-to-air TV channel Peace TV's downlink permission has been cancelled for violating downlink conditions," the ministry said in the directive.

A spokesman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Commission (BTRC) said, "Its (Peace TV) downlink permission has been cancelled in line with information ministry's decision."

The action came a day after Cabinet Committee on Law and Order during a special meeting yesterday decided to ban the Mumbai-based preacher's channel.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan had earlier said that Bangladesh's intelligence agencies were investigating the 50-year-old Dr Naik's possible role in the cafe attack.

"He is on our security scanner... Our intelligence agencies are investigating his activities as his lectures appeared provocative," Khan had said.

Khan had said the investigators were also probing Dr Naik's financial transactions in Bangladesh.

Zakir Naik never terrorized anyone nor will he be.....I have seen his many programs....but never ever said anything about terrorism....in fact he asks everyone to love the country...and sacrifice life whenever it is required.....

Coronavirus: Karnataka sets up helpline for assistance

Bengaluru, Feb 17: The Karnataka govt has set up an exclusive helpline 104 'Arogya Sahayavani' for Coronavirus assistance to people with recent travel history to China and other affected countries, a statement said here on Monday.

According to the statement, the Karnataka Department of Family and Welfare set up the exclusive helpline 104, 'Arogya Sahayavani' on Sunday. People, who recently traveled to China and other affected countries and who have developed symptoms of Covid-19 virus are requested to immediately contact 104–Arogya Sahayavani or the health authorities and provide all necessary details in order to take precautionary measures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the recent novel Coronavirus (COVID 2019) as an International Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

8 people detained for trying to hoist 'Uttara Karnataka flag'

Belgaum, Jan 1: Police detained a group of around eight people who were allegedly trying to hoist 'Uttara Karnataka flag' in Hire Bagewadi area here on Wednesday.

This comes amid tensions between Karnataka and neighbouring Maharashtra over the border issue with protests on both sides, which have also led to the cancellation of bus services between the two states.

Protesters in Belagavi burnt an effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, following which Shiv Sena workers had launched a protest near the Kolhapur bus stand on Sunday, and burnt an effigy of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

The long-standing border dispute between the two states over is pending before the Supreme Court for several years.

On December 7, Thackeray had chaired a high-level meeting over the border dispute between two states. It was decided in the meeting that attempts will be made to get fast track hearing in Supreme Court on the issue.
