IS banned in India, says Rajnath Singh

Rajnath SinghNew Delhi, Dec 17: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said the Islamic State (IS) outfit has been proscribed in the country, and praised minority families for discouraging their children from being sucked into the global terror network.

“We have banned this organisation (IS) as a first step. I will like to inform (the House) that the group has been banned under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act,” he said in the Lower House.

The act contains a list of proscribed organisations referred also in a Schedule to the UN Prevention and Suppression of Terrorism (Implementation of Security Council Resolutions) Order, 2007. The United Nations (Security Council) Act, 1947, provides for it.

Condemning the IS, Indian Union Muslim League MP E Ahmed said, “Nobody will associate with them. I assure you on behalf of my party that we will never allow anybody to support the IS. We will always oppose them tooth and nail because they are doing everything against the principles of Islam”.

Though Singh’s statement was in response to a joint query from MPs Mullappally Ramachandhran and Sultan Ahmed during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, it did throw light on global terrorism's influence on the country at a time when Bengaluru-based techie Mehdi Masroor Biswas has been arrested for allegedly propagating IS views through Twitter.

The two MPs had asked the government whether any arrest had been made or case registered against Indian nationals for participating in the IS' activities recently as Singh himself had raised an alarm over the outfit's growing threat.

Singh said the government banned the group recognising the threat it pose world over.

New Delhi, Jun 30: With a spike of 18,522 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, India's coronavirus count now stand at 5,66,840, said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry, 418 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours. The number of deaths in the country now stands at 16,893.

There are 2,15,125 active coronavirus cases in the country while the number of cured/discharged patients stands at 3,34,821 and one patient migrated.

As per the Ministry, Maharashtra is the worst-hit state with regard to the COVID-19 cases and has reported 1,69,883 cases, including 73, 313 active cases 88,960 cured/discharged patients and 7,610 fatalities.

Tamil Nadu has a total of 86,224 cases including 1,141 deaths. Delhi's COVID-19 count stands at 85,161 cases and 2,680 fatalities.

The total number of samples tested up to 29 June is 86,08,654 of which 2,10,292 samples were tested yesterday, informed the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Patna, Jun 25: At least 83 people died due to thunderstorms in Bihar in the last 24 hours, according to Chief Minister's Office.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced Rs 4 lakhs each for the families of deceased.

Thirteen people died in Gopalganj, 8 each in Madhubani and Nawada, 6 each in Baghalpur and Siwan, 5 each in Darbhanga, Banka, East Champaran and 3 each in Khagaria and Aurangabad.

Due to thunderstorms, two people each lost their lives in West Champaran, Kishanganj, Jamui, Jahanabad, Purnia, Supaul, Buxar, Kaimur while one death each was reported in Samastipur, Shivhar, Saran, Sitamarhi and Madhepura.

The Indian Defence Ministry, which had in its document that China intruded into the Indian territory in eastern Ladakh in early May, on August 6 took down the page which it had uploaded on its website.

According to a report by news channel NDTV, the ministry, in its document, had said the Chinese aggression has been "increasing along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and more particularly in Galwan valley since May 5."

"The Chinese side has transgressed in the areas of Kungrang Nala, Gogra and north bank of Pangong Tso Lake on May 17-18," the document, titled 'Chinese Aggression on LAC' stated.

The document revealed that "... a violent face-off incident took place between the two sides on June 15, resulting in casualties on both sides."

After the clash, a second corps commander level meeting took place on June 22 to discuss the modalities of de-escalation. "While engagement and dialogue at military and diplomatic level is continuing to arrive at mutually acceptable consensus, the present standoff is likely to be prolonged," it said.

A defence ministry spokesperson told the news channel that the document "did not go through him".

The opposition Congress, meanwhile, asked the government why the report was taken down with party leader Rahul Gandhi alleging that removal of the document from websites would not change facts.

"Forget standing up to China, India's PM lacks the courage even to name them. Denying China is in our territory and removing documents from websites won't change the facts," Gandhi tweeted.
