Banning West Indian players in IPL can affect the ‘Brand value’ of the event – Will BCCI take this gamble?

Oct 20: The sudden cancellation of the ongoing India tour by the West Indian players has triggered a lot of controversies. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is thinking about withdrawing all relations with The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). Some reports even suggested that Indian board might ban the Caribbean cricketers in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). Sandipan Banerjee digs deep and finds out the possibility of this ban before the IPL Governing council meeting on October 21.

Brand value“Love it. Hate it. But you cannot ignore it.” -This much-used adage is tailor-made for the lucrative IPL. Since its commencement in 2008 IPL has managed to court success, controversy and cynicism in equal measure. But what it has always managed is to stay top-of-the-mind. IPL is not just a cricket tournament now; it has become a brand — a brand that has put Indian cricket at the top of cricketing world.

To build this brand, the West Indian cricketers had contributed a lot. Whenever people think of IPL, it reminds them of the gigantic sixes of ‘CG’ (Chris Gayle), the mystique of Sunil Narine, the calypso jigs of Dwayne Bravo, the acrobatic fielding of Kieron Pollard, the controlled aggression of Dwayne Smith, or the ubiquitous resilience of Darren Sammy. IPL, as they call, is, “Cricketainment”, and Caribbean cricketers provide tremendous value for almost every franchise as well as the tournament as a whole.

Additionally, West Indian cricketers have often been faces of different franchises when it comes to promotion. Gayle, for example, is the undisputed face of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at this moment despite the presence of giants like AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. Will Vijay Maliya accept a sudden ban on his most influential and most productive cricketer? And while we talk of Gayle, what about other champions like Pollard, Narine, and Bravo, who have carved out respective niches in IPL when it comes to representing teams? Their ‘Brand Values’ are undeniably high; sponsors invest on these stars, which, in turn, bring revenue for the franchises and the tournament as a whole.

It will not be easy for BCCI to proceed on this sensitive issue without consulting the franchises. Having said that, , keeping the rigid nature of BCCI in mind, there is a possibility that they will still go ahead with the decision, in which case there may be a showdown between them and franchises.

According to some sources the IPL career of the Caribbean cricketers are already secured. West Indies were firm when it came to not take field in the fourth One-day International (ODI) at Dharamsala, but a few top WICB members convinced the players to play the match which in turn will secure their IPL future.

The fate of the players will be decided in the IPL governing council meeting in Hyderabad on October 21, but looking from outside it can be said risking the IPL brand value by banning the Calypso charmers will be a big gamble by BCCI. Will they take this gamble? Highly unlikely.

New Delhi, Apr 24: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday extended wishes to the "most prolific batsman of all time" Sachin Tendulkar on his 47th birthday.

ICC took to Twitter and wrote: "Happy birthday to Sachin Tendulkar, the most prolific batsman of all time! To celebrate, we will give you the opportunity to vote for his top ODI innings in a bracket challenge! Stay tuned to join the celebrations."

The Maharashtra-born player had an illustrious career in the game, creating several records.
Tendulkar made his debut in Test cricket on November 15, 1989. In the same year on December 18, he played his first ODI match.

The legendary cricketer has the most number of runs in the longest format of the game, amassing 15,921 runs. Along the way, Tendulkar scored 51 Test centuries, most by any player.

Things are no different in ODI cricket as Tendulkar atop the list of most runs in this format as well. He has accumulated 18,426 runs in ODI which includes 49 tons.

Tendulkar represented the country in six World Cups during his career that lasted for 24 years. He was the part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad.

This year, Master Blaster decided not to celebrate his birthday due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis in the country.

Islamabad, Aug 7: Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, known for his blistering deliveries on the cricket field, recently baffled many with a deadly off-field bouncer by claiming he is willing to eat grass if it enabled an increase in budget for his country's Army!

"If Allah ever gives me the authority, I will eat grass myself but I will increase the budget of the army," said Akhtar in an interview with ARY News.

The 'Rawalpindi Express', considered the fastest bowler in history said he does not understand why the civilian sector cannot work in collaboration with the Armed forces.

"I will ask my army chief to sit with me and make decisions. If the budget is 20 per cent, I will make it 60 per cent. If we insult each other, the loss is ours only," the once feared fast-bowler said.

Akthar had also claimed to ARY News interview that he was willing to take a bullet for his country and had turned down a county stint just because he wanted to fight the 1999 Kargil War.

Ties between India and Pakistan have been strained in the recent months over several issues, the latest being Pakistan's attempt to broach in the UNSC the issue of Kashmir on the first anniversary of the India's move to scrap the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and to split the erstwhile state into two union territories .

Pakistan also has not been in a good financial position and under prime minister Imran Khan, himself an all rounder cricketer, has added nearly USD 22 billion, that is 35 per cent to the nation's international debt pile in the last two years, according to an Asia Times report in July.

While Pakistan recently received USD 1.39 billion from the IMF to cushion the economic shocks caused due to COVID-19 outbreak, Akthar had a few months ago proposed that a joint cricket match be played between India and Pakistan to raise funds to fight the coronavirus. The suggestion that was put down by cricketers in India.

Meanwhile the 'Pindi boy' whose deadly pace and bounce was once dreaded by batsmen had recently taken to Twitter to deny former India cricketer Virender Sehwag's claim of sledging him.

Sehwag along with other Indian crickerters such as Harbhajan Singh and even Rahul Dravid had been at the receiving end of Akthar's sledging and antics during their playing days.

"Yes, totally self made story by him. Mujhe yeh bol k bach k jana kidhar tha us nay," Akthar tweeted to a report in which Sehwag claimed that he had sledged the 'Rawalpindi Express' by telling him that Sachin Tendulkar was his father.

During an awards ceremony Sehwag had recounted that fed up with Akthar's sledging and retaliated by telling him to say the same things to Tendulkar, who smashed the 'Pindi boy' for a six. Sehwag quipped that he told Akthar then that "Baap baap hota hai".

In the recent ARY interview, asked about the allegation made against him by former India cricketer Virendra Sehwag that he makes pro-India comments for greater following on social media channels, Akhtar said, "I cannot talk on the basis of hate."

Feb 13: Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna were buried in a private funeral service in Southern California last week, multiple outlets reported late Tuesday.

Citing Kobe Bryant's death certificate, Los Angeles Fox affiliate KTTV reported the remains of the former Lakers star and his daughter were transferred to Pacific View Memorial Park and Mortuary in Corona del Mar. Kobe and Brianna were laid to rest in a private ceremony there last Friday.

According to KTTV, the death certificate cited Kobe's cause of death as "blunt trauma" sustained in a "commercial helicopter crash." It also said his death was "rapid."

Corona del Mar is a community within Newport Beach, where the Bryant family lives.

Kobe, 41, and Gianna, 13, were among nine people killed when the helicopter they were in crashed on a hillside in Calabasas, Calif., northwest of Los Angeles, on Jan. 26. Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, 56; his wife, Keri; and their daughter Alyssa, 14 -- who played on the same club basketball team as Gianna Bryant -- also were killed. Christina Mauser, a 38-year-old who was the top assistant coach of the Mamba girls basketball team, was also killed in the accident, as were Sarah Chester, 45; her daughter Payton Chester, 13; and pilot Ara Zobayan, 50.

A public memorial service for the Bryants will be held Feb. 24 at Staples Center, beginning at 10 a.m. PT.

While the date -- 2/24 -- conveniently falls between two Lakers' home games, it still could have been chosen symbolically. Gianna -- one Kobe and Vanessa' four daughters -- wore No. 2 on her basketball jersey while Kobe was No. 24 for part of his 20-year-tenure with the Lakers, and his retired jerseys -- he also wore No. 8 -- hang at Staples Center.

The Los Angeles Times reported that "entry is expected to be severely restricted" at the venue despite Staples Center's capacity of about 20,000.
