Belagavi, Jan 26: Belagavi will now be connected to 13 destinations across the country. The Union government cleared five airline operators to offer civilian air connectivity between the Sambra airport in Belagavi with 13 domestic airports.

These are part of the 235 routes announced under the regional connectivity scheme (RCS).

According to a social media post shared by Suresh Angadi, MP, the operators will connect Belagavi to Hyderabad, Tirupati, Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Kadapa, Mysuru, Indore, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Nasik and Nagpur. Even before the RCS was implemented, Belagavi had connectivity to Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai. Now, the residents of the city can fly to 16 destinations from Belagavi.

The five operators selected are Ghodawat Star Air, Turbo Megha, InterGlobe, Spice Jet, and Alliance Air.

There are three airports within 100 km of Belagavi. The domestic airport in Hubballi connects 22 destinations and the one in Kolhapur connects four. Dabolim in Goa is among the well-connected international airports in the country.

Belagavi had regular daily flights to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai before the Centre implemented UDAN RCS.

Hubballi and Kolhapur gained benefited in the first two rounds of the scheme and the number of flights in Sambra reduced significantly. Other than Air India, there were no operators.

Industrialists and some citizen activists like Uday Kinjwadkar started the ‘Save IXG’ movement. They campaigned for reviving Sambra, whose IATA code is IXG, for nearly a year, online and offline. MP Suresh Angadi and MLA Abhay Patil met the Union Civil Aviation Minister and senior officials to urge them to include Sambra in UDAN’s third phase.

The leaders have thanked the Union government for the inclusion.
