Bengaluru, Oct 19: Nandini M, a city-based software engineer, who prefers to be identified as an “animal rights activist” hit the headlines earlier this week after she was allegedly attacked by a mob under the limits of Talaghattapura police station.

The woman had claimed that she was attacked and her car was damaged by a mob after she lodged a formal complaint with the jurisdictional police against the illegal slaughter of cattle at Avalahalli near Talaghattapura.

According to her, two police constables aslo had accompanied her to the spot but they ran away when the mob attacked her. In her second complaint, she went on to claim that the mob raised pro-Pakistan slogans.

The woman gained popularity overnight thanks to the media and saffron forces that not only glorified her but also seized the opportunity to target the state government for failing to curb illegal cattle slaughter.

However, the police later clarified that there was no connection between the alleged attack on Nandini and her fight against the cattle slaughter.

DCP (south) SD Sharanappa was quoted by the report as saying that the police had immediately acted on the complaint filed by Nandini and stopped the illegal slaughter of cattle. The police arrested three people for allegedly slaughtering cows under the cow protection law and rescued some cattle.

However, without trusting the police, Nandini went the lane to personally inspect whether they acted on her complaint. A few people pelted stones at her car for causing accident. The police have also detained seven persons for allegedly pelting stones.

Narrating the sequence of events Bengaluru police commissioner T Sunil Kumar said that Nandini and her two woman assistants had lodged a complaint about cows being illegally slaughtered at Talaghattapura on October 14.

Kumar said Nandini also visited the spot even though police had asked her not to go there when police raided the abattoir.

The police officer said that Nandini’s car had allegedly dashed against an auto-rickshaw and also a petty shop in the area, which irked the residents. The violence was because of the accident. Some of the miscreants pelted stones at Nandini’s car for her rash driving.

On the other hand the local residents, who witnessed the incident, have rubbished the allegation of raising pro-Pakistan slogans as a blatant lie.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: The city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has ordered a special inquiry by the additional commissioner in connection with sexual harassment on a girl hailing from Kasaragod and the allegation that there were attempts to convert her to another religion.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje on Sunday met Rao along with the girl and gave a complaint that two youths from Kasargod had raped her and forced her to convert to their religion.

A complaint has been filed in the Kasargod police station, but no action has been taken against them. Since both the accused work in Electronics City police station jurisdiction, she urged the police to arrest them.

Rao said he was yet to gather information about the case and he had directed the additional commissioner to conduct a preliminary investigation and submit a report.

After filing a complaint, Shobha told reporters that she has been sexually harassed ever since she was a minor.

The MP said that the girl, who was brought from Kasaragod to Electronics City, where the accused youths run a business, was allegedly raped. “I have asked the Police Commissioner to direct the Electronics City police to register an FIR and arrest the youths,” she said.

“I have spoken to the survivor and she said that the youths were also forcing her to convert to Islam and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not,” the MP alleged.

Shobha went on to claim that there was a gang that could be operating to forcibly convert Hindu women to Islam. She also met Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa along with the girl’s family members and gave a petition.

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar on Sunday hit out at the BJP and RSS for taking out a route march in Ramanagara against the controversial Jesus Christ statue.

“Just because the BJP won 25 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress workers need not lose hope. If the Congress and JD(S) had worked out a better strategy, the BJP would not have won even 10 seats. We will correct our mistakes,” the former Congress minister said.

After the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has failed to do well in assembly polls and has been losing power in many states. People are hitting the streets protesting against its policies such as CAA and NRC, he said.

Accusing the BJP and RSS of not being able to digest Congress’ victory in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha segment in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he said that the BJP is trying hard to make inroads into the constituency represented by his brother D K Suresh. “Let them take out route march, we don’t care,” he said.

“We all know what the BJP did during the Lok Sabha elections, and the media reported how much money they spent in the elections. What was the Election Commission doing? Was the Income Tax Department sitting with its eyes closed? Why did they conduct raids only in Hassan, Shivamogga and Mandya districts,” he asked.

He alleged that false cases were slapped when him and other leaders, including H D Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundurao.

Daman, Mar 3: A BJP councillor was shot dead on Monday in the Union Territory of Daman, police said.

Salim Memon was sitting in his motorcycle showroom when three to four unidentified persons shot four to five bullets after asking a visitor there to move out, an official said quoting eye-witnesses.

While fleeing, they also shot two rounds close to this visitor who was standing outside, he said.

"Memon was rushed to a hospital in Marwad area but was declared dead on arrival. CCTV footage is being scanned to nab the culprits," said Daman Superintendent of Police Vikramjit Singh.

Memon was elected to Daman municipality as a Congress candidate but then switched over to the BJP.

Sources said Memon, who also has a land brokerage business, had come out of jail a few months back in connection with a case of rivalry.
