Bengaluru, Apr 28: Police have seized 42kg of gold ornaments worth about Rs 12.5 crore from a van at an election checkpost at Balepura near Devanahalli on the outskirts of the city.
Bheemashankar S Guled, superintendent of police, Bengaluru Rural district, said the gold was being transported in an SUV by four persons, including a gunman.
Officers on duty at the checkpost flagged down the SUV around 10.30am for a routine check and stumbled upon the gold Ahead of the Assembly elections, they were monitoring vehicle movement at Balepura check-post.
" The men transporting the gold said it belongs to a jewellery chain store, but failed to produce documents to prove their claims," Guled said.
“The four have been taken into custody for further questioning. They said they were transporting the gold to Hosur, Tamil Nadu, from Mumbai,” he added.
“They told us that the gold was being couriered to a Chennai jeweller. However, we were given no prior intimation of this. The men also did not have any documents to substantiate their claims,” said a police officer.
A case has been registered at Channarayapatna police station. The police have notified the Commercial Tax Department and are investigating the case.
