Bengaluru ease past Bharat

April 25, 2015

Pune, Apr 25: Bengaluru FC joined Mohun Bagan at the top of the I-League table after defeating Bharat FC 2-0 at the Balewadi Stadium on Friday.

BengaluruGoals from Eugeneson Lyngdoh (29th minute) and C K Vineeth (55th) scripted the victory for the defending champions, who are on 28 points, the same as Bagan. However, BFC have played two games more than the Kolkata club, who have played 13 matches.

The Blues, who had defeated Pune FC in their previous match, came up with a fine performance on the day. Lyngdoh’s strike in the 29th minute came when Sean Rooney intercepted a poor pass from Surajit Bose before teeing up the ball for the midfielder, who placed a peach of a strike past goalkeeper Shahinlal Meloli from 20 yards out. Lyngdoh had struck a similar goal when Bharat FC visited Bengaluru earlier in the league.

BFC coach Ashley Westwood retained the eleven that took the field against Pune FC on Tuesday while Robin Singh was on the bench after serving a one-game suspension. Bharat, meanwhile, had a string of absentees owing to a combination of suspensions, injuries and a family emergency. But despite the goal, the first half was an absorbing one where possession and attacks swapped hands swiftly.

However, post the break, it was a different tale.

Ten minutes into the second half, Bengaluru struck again when Vineeth scored his second goal in as many games. Receiving the ball on the left, Rooney made a run before passing to Lyngdoh inside the box. Skipping the option to shoot, Lyngdoh squared the ball to Vineeth who drew Meloli out before turning and placing his shot calmly, making it 2-0.

With a two-goal cushion and Bengaluru completely in control, Westwood pulled out his scorers within a few minutes after the hour mark, replacing Lyngdoh and Vineeth with Robin and Sunil Chhetri. The changes added a fresh thrust to Bengaluru’s attacks and Robin came close to grabbing a brace of headers.

Bengaluru next travel to Maldives where they take on Maziya S&RC in the AFC Cup on Tuesday. A win would send them to the pre-quarterfinals.

Pune play Bagan

Pune FC will be eager to end their home campaign on a high when they host Bagan on Saturday.

The game will be a crucial one for Pune FC after back-to-back losses in the last two home games and they will be hoping to shrug off the disappointing run and seal their fifth home win of the season.

The encounter will also be the fourth time the sides have faced off this season, with each team winning one match and the other one ending in a draw.

Lausanne, Mar 25: The World Archery has hailed as a 'brave decision' the International Olympic Committee (IOC) move to postpone the 2020 Tokyo Olympics until next year due to coronavirus pandemic.

"We commend the conscientious and brave decision taken by Tokyo 2020 and the International Olympic Committee to delay this summer's Games in the face of an unprecedented challenge to humanity," Ugur Erdener, the World Archery president, said in an official statement.

The decision to postpone the Summer Olympics was confirmed by the IOC, on Tuesday, after the organising body for the event and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to reschedule the quadrennial event in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This is not an easy situation, especially for the athletes who had been training hard for Tokyo 2020. I hope that everyone understands why this decision has been made and I urge archers around the world to retain hope and reset for this new timetable," he added.

The IOC has, however, said that the original name of Tokyo 2020 will remain intact irrespective of the fact that it will take place next year.

The Tokyo Olympic Games were slated to be held from July 24 to August 9.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not end its partnership with Chinese companies. Vivo, the Chinese smartphone maker, is the main sponsor of the new IPL season as well. Apart from Vivo, PayTM and Dream 11 will also be at the helm of the 13th edition of the IPL. The IPL governing council meeting on Sunday decided to retain the old sponsors.

As soon as the IPL GC announced the decision of retaining the sponsors, a huge number of fans took to Twitter to slam the board for the same. #BoycottIPL started trending as the users urged others to boycott the tournament for the Chinese connection.

Earlier, the demand for exclusion of Chinese companies from the IPL was strong in the wake of the India-China border dispute. But the BCCI cannot abruptly end its collaboration with them. Because of the signed contract itself. And in this age of declining economy, it is difficult to find new sponsors quickly.

The current BCCI contract with Vivo is for five years. Vivo has invested Rs 2,199 crore to become the main sponsor of the IPL. The contract was signed in 2017. However, the BCCI’s move is paving the way for new discussions as calls are mounting across the country to boycott Chinese companies.

The BCCI announced other important decisions besides retaining sponsors. The IPL will be held from September 19 to November 10. The Indian government has given permission to the BCCI to hold the IPL in the UAE. With this, all obstacles in the way of organizing the tournament were removed.

The IPL matches will be played at 7.30 pm Indian time (6 pm UAE time). Most matches are about one match a day. There are a total of ten ‘double headers’ (two matches a day) in the tournament. Franchisees are allowed to appoint as many replacements as they want in the new season in view of the new health situation. At the same time, the maximum number of players a franchise can accommodate is 24. The BCCI is also planning to host a women’s IPL tournament.
