Bhatkal engineering student among two killed in car-truck collision

Bhatkal, Sep 18: Tow persons including an engineering student were killed and three others sustained injuries in a head-on collision between a Maruti Swift car and a speeding truck at Ankola on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Fayaz Ahmed (21) and his relative Syed Ahmed (45), both residents of Bhatkal. Fayaz was a mechanical engineering student at Anjuman College of Engineering, Bhatkal.

The three injured are Fayaz Ahmed’s father Fazlurahman, Javed Kola and Pinto. Two of them have been admitted to a hospital in Kundapur while a critically injured Pinto was taken to Manipal.

The tragedy took place on national highway when the family members were going to Hubballi in their car. The truck was plying towards Mangaluru.

Bengaluru, Mar 22: The Karnataka government on Sunday afternoon announced that 9 districts in the State will be under lock down till March 31, barring essential services. It also announced imposition of Section 144 across the state for 3 hours - between 9 p.m. (when the "Janata curfew" will end) to 12 midnight.

The nine COVID-19-affected districts are Bengaluru, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada (Mangaluru), Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburgi and Chikkablapur.

Announcing these measures after attending a meeting chaired by Chief Minister B. S Yeddyurappa, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that there will be no commercial activity in these districts till March 31.

Inter-district movement, including public transport will be restricted. "Public transport will not work across the state tomorrow too. Air conditioned buses will be stopped till March 31," he added. He also clarified that while public transport, including KSRTC, BMTC and Namma Metro, will be withdrawn, private transport services such as cabs and autos will continue to ply.

According to Mr. Bommai, the State government will put in place further measures next week depending on how the situation will unfold in the State and the neighbouring States.

"Government offices will be operational in the State, including in the nine COVID 19-affected districts. As per the current schedule, the legislature sessions will also continue. Pourakarmikas will be working at 50% strength," he added.

Bengaluru, April 5: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday urged the people to follow the countrywide lockdown strictly amid the rise of COVID-19 cases on Sunday, and said that he has been receiving complaints of people violating the restrictions.

"Everyone knows the damage caused by the COVID- 19 infection around the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a nationwide lockdown till April 14 for the protection of people's lives. Even in our state, Bidar, Mysore, Mangalore, Bengaluru and Kalaburagi districts have witnessed a rise in the coronavirus cases day by day," Yediyurappa said.

"The government has taken a number of precautionary measures to control the spread of coronavirus including the closure of borders for public, restrictions on publicly trafficked areas and religious places. The people of the state have to strictly follow the lockdown mandate," he added.

"I have received a lot of complaints about lockdown not being followed effectively. Please remember that the key to ending the lockdown is in your hands. Only you can break the chain by strictly adhering to the restrictions," the CM tweeted.

Earlier on Saturday, 16 people tested positive for coronavirus in Karnataka, taking the total number of cases to 144 in the state.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 3,374 in India on Sunday, as per the data provided the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
