Bihar toppers, college director arrested; Answersheets may have been changed

June 8, 2016

Patna, Jun 8: The police have arrested the four toppers of the Bihar board examination and the director of the VIR college on Wednesday.

toppersThe four arrested students are: Sourabh Shrestha, Rahul Kumar, Ruby Rai and Shalini, the 'toppers' in the exam, whose unfamiliarity with their chosen subjects of study was exposed on local television and revealed what was going on.

The Special Investigation Team, probing the Bihar exam controversy, has also detained three persons considered close to Bihar School Examination Board Chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh.

"SIT teams raided several places on Tuesday night," a police officer told this correspondent, "The raids re still going on to arrest others involved in the racket."

A first information report was lodged on Monday night after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an investigation.

The SIT raided sites in Vaishali, Muzaffarpur and Patna to arrest Amit Kumar 'Bachcha' Rai, principal of the Vishnu Rai College, where the four toppers of the Class 12 science and arts streams studied.

"Bachcha Rai is absconding," one police officer said, "the police raided his college in Vaishali and seized documents."

Unconfirmed reports said BSEB chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh submitted his resignation to the principal secretary of the state education department late on Tuesday night.

The FIR lodged at Patna's Kotwali police station alleges fraud and machination by the V R college to influence the results of the Class 12 exam.

"The answer books of the toppers appeared to have been changed, which makes it a case of fraud," a police officer said.

According to the FIR, the exam centre for V R College students was located at the G A High School in Hajipur, the Vaishali district headquarters.

All the answer books from Vaishali went for evaluation to Arrah and Bhabhua, except for the V R College which were evaluated at the Rajendra Nagar High School in Patna. "That naturally raised questions," the police officer said.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday launched 'Sapthapadi', a mass marriage program in Bengaluru.

The state authorities will provide a mangalsutra worth Rs 40,000 and Rs 5,000 to the groom. They will also give Rs 10,000 to the bride after marriage.

The state government has also informed that the department has shortlisted some temples where the mass marriages will be held.

Yediyurappa also confirmed that the government will help communities like Muslim and Christians also to organise mass marriage as per their respective rituals.

According to the state government guidelines, issued last year in November, both parents of the couple should attend the ceremony if the duo wants to avail benefits of this offer but those who want to marry without their parent's permission do not stand a chance here.

Also, those wanting a love marriage will not be able to reap the benefits of the scheme. The plan is to conduct about 1,000 marriages in 90-100 temples.

The couples wanting to tie the knot are expected to register themselves 30 days before the scheduled date in the temple. Following which a list will be prepared.

Bengaluru, Mar 9: The BJP government in Karnataka on Monday scrapped the Shaadi Bhagya Scheme that was launched by Congress government in the state in 2013.

Under the scheme, Rs 50,000 was given to Muslim brides for marriage expenses after they submitted their Aadhar and BPL cards.

While the previous coalition government had allocated Rs 60 crore budget for the scheme, the BJP government decided to discontinue the scheme. Congress called the move by the state government as "anti-minority".

"They have launched a scheme for the majority community. I welcome that. But why are you discontinuing one scheme? It is a small scheme where marginalized people get a little help from the government," Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad told reporters.

"He (Karnataka Chief Minister) has wilfully reduced the money allotted to all the schemes," he added.

BJP MLA Basavana Gowda Patil Yantal welcomed the decision of the Karnataka Government to scrap the scheme.

"The minority does not need appeasement because equal citizenship needs to apply to all in this country. I wholeheartedly welcome this move by the Karnataka Government," Yantal told reporters.

"Should we not give the majority people anything in India? India not giving anything to the majority, is that secular? We have already given them Pakistan," he said.

The MLAs from the minority community in the state have demanded a meeting with the Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
