Bihar village where Hindus maintain a centuries-old mosque

Nalanda, Sept 8: Amid rising religious fanaticism and daily instances of communal flare-ups in the country, a village in Bihar's Nalanda district is a rare and textbook case of liberalism and open-mindedness.

Maadhi village has no Muslims, but namaz at its over 200-year-old mosque is offered five times a day by the Hindus. The Hindus also take care of the maintenance of the mosque.

"We (Hindus) don't know the 'Azaan', but a pen drive (with a recording of the Azaan) is played every day to perform the ritual," said Hans Kumar, a village resident.

According to the villagers, Maadhi had a sizeable Muslim population, but people gradually migrated.

"There was no one to take care of the mosque, so the Hindus had to come forward," sais Gautam, who takes care of the mosque.

Gautam said no one knows when the mosque was constructed and by whom, but the Hindus offer visit it before anything auspicious.

"The mosque is cleaned and prayers are offered every morning and evening. People also pray here whenever they have a problem," said Janki Pandit, the village priest.

Veerappan's daughter Vidya Rani Joins BJP

Krishnagiri, Feb 24: Vidya Rani, daughter of dead sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, joined the BJP on Saturday at an event organised in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri.

Party general secretary Muralidhar Rao and former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan were present at the event.

"I want to work for the poor and underprivileged irrespective of their caste and religion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's schemes are for the people and I want to take them to the people," said Vidya Rani.

Besides Vidya Rani, the event saw as many as 1,000 members from other political parties join the BJP.

Karnataka: Covid-19 death toll increases to 30; total cases cross 700-mark

Bengaluru, May 7: A 55-year old woman from Davanagere became the 30th COVID-19 related fatality in Karnataka, where a total number of infections has crossed 700-mark, with eight new positive cases being confirmed, the health department said on Thursday.

The deceased woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension, she was admitted with a complaint of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was on a ventilator, the department said in its mid-day situation update.

She died today at a designated hospital in Davanagere, it said.

"Eight new positive cases have been reported from last evening to this noon...

Till date 701 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 30 deaths and 363 discharges," the update said.

The eight new cases reported include three from Davangere, indulging the deceased patient; also three from Kalaburagi, and one each from Hirebagewadi in Belagavi district and Bengaluru urban.

While four cases are contacts of patients earlier tested positive, three are with the history of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and one is a SARI case.

Five among eight new cases are women and three are men.

5 Covid Day Care Centres with 870 beds opened in Udupi

Udupi, Jul 20: Five COVID Day Care Centres have been opened here on Monday with combined 870 bed for asymptomatic Covid-19 patients.

The Centres are set up at Karkala (1), Udupi (3) and Kundapura (1). Presently more than 100 patients are being treated in these Centres.

These Centres have been opened in the wake of high incidences of Covid-19 cases in the district. They are set up for asymptomatic patients who do not wish to be treated at home.
