BJP is known forming govt even after losing polls; Cong-JD(S) ended trend: Yechury

New Delhi, MAY 22: The ripples created by the Karnataka results have refused to die down in the CPM with general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday virtually rejecting an editorial in the party mouthpiece that pilloried Congress.

A communique issued by the CPM polit bureau acknowledged the developments in Karnataka, where the "BJP-RSS attempts to cobble a majority through horse-trading have been thwarted".

"The BJP has perfected the art of losing elections and then forming the governments. This trend has been stopped with the formation of a government by the JD(S) and Congress," he told a press conference a day after the polit bureau meeting.

He said the developments in Karnataka are the "beginning of a big political change" in the country and he, along with Kerala Chief Minster Pinarayi Vijayan, would attend the swearing-in.

His remarks come days after Peoples Democracy, edited by Polit Bureau (PB) member Prakash Karat, described the Karnataka results as a "big loss" to the Congress and criticised its chief Rahul Gandhi's temple visits, saying it "proved to be a flawed and compromising approach" to counter the Hindutva forces".

When asked about the editorial in the party mouthpiece, Yechury said, "you have the PB communique. That is the party line."

Yechury's subtle public comments against the editorial comes amid signals that the faction led by Karat, which takes a stringent anti-Congress line in the fight against the BJP, does not want to water down their Opposition to the main Opposition party.

The editorial last week also came at a time when Yechury was holding discussions to convince the JD(S) leadership, which was speculated to be warming up to the BJP, not to dump the secular camp.

The party has been witnessing a tussle between supporters of Yechury and Karat on whether the CPM should have an understanding with the Congress to counter the BJP.

Yechury, who argues for a broad-based understanding with all secular parties that includes the Congress, had managed, in the Party Congress, to amend the draft political resolution to keep the options open for an electoral understanding with the Congress.

New Delhi, Mar 16: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, most airlines in the world will be bankrupt by the end of May and only a coordinated government and industry action right now can avoid the catastrophe, said global aviation consultancy firm CAPA in a note on Monday.

"As the impact of the coronavirus and multiple government travel reactions sweep through our world, many airlines have probably already been driven into technical bankruptcy, or are at least substantially in breach of debt covenants," it stated.

Across the world, airlines have announced drastic reduction in their operations in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. For example, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines stated on Sunday that it would be grounding 300 aircraft in its fleet and reduce flights by 40 per cent.

The US has suspended all tourist visas for people belonging to the European Union, the UK and Ireland. Similarly, the Indian government has suspended all tourist visas and e-visas granted on or before March 11.

CAPA, in its note on Monday, said, "By the end of May-2020, most airlines in the world will be bankrupt. Coordinated government and industry action is needed - now - if catastrophe is to be avoided."

Cash reserves are running down quickly as fleets are grounded and "what flights there are operate much less than half full", it added.

"Forward bookings are far outweighed by cancellations and each time there is a new government recommendation it is to discourage flying. Demand is drying up in ways that are completely unprecedented. Normality is not yet on the horizon," it said.

India's largest airline IndiGo -- which has around 260 planes in its fleet -- said on Thursday that it has seen a decline of 15-20 per cent in daily bookings in the last few days.

The low-cost carrier had stated that it expects its quarterly earnings to be materially impacted due to such decline.

CAPA said the failure to coordinate the future will result in protectionism and much less competition.

"The alternative does not bear thinking about. An unstructured and nationalistic outcome will not be survival of the fittest.

"It will mostly consist of airlines that are the biggest and the best-supported by their governments. The system will reek of nationalism. And it will not serve the needs of the 21st century world. That is not a prospect that any responsible government should be prepared to contemplate," the consultancy firm said.

New Delhi, Mar 14: A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to three alleged members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) -- Parvez (Delhi President), Iliyas (Delhi Secretary) and Danish -- in connection with the organization's role in the northeast Delhi violence last month.

Metropolitan Magistrate Prabhdeep Kaur granted bail to all three accused on furnishing personal bail bonds of Rs 30,000 each.

The court said that "Investigating Officer (IO) has nowhere mentioned that any of the non-bailable offences has been disclosed or has come out during investigation till now, therefore, accused be enlarged on bail."

According to police, the three men were arrested for allegedly spreading fake propaganda during the anti-CAA protests.

Delhi police, while opposing bail and seeking remand, stated that police custody is required because accused were involved in a conspiracy of communal riots which resulted in the death of 50 innocent people and injuries to approximately 300 persons and huge loss of government and public properties.

Jan 6: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday said the country's economy is not showing good signs though Prime Minister Narendra Modi has manifested tremendous leadership skills in fighting terror and in social welfare projects.

The fiscal decisions of the government have not yielded the desired results, the Rajya Sabha MP said here.

"Modi had shown tremendous leadership skill in fighting terror, in several social areas, micro areas like bringing toilets to every village home. But the economy is a complex system...," he said while taking part in a discussion.

While every minister is talking about a 5 trillion dollar economy by 2024, but the current GDP growth has to be multiplied in four years to achieve that, the former Union minister said.

He said, if wages are slashed as a measure to cope with the situation, labor will become cheap but that will also cut down the people's purchasing power triggering dip in demand, closing down factories and rise in unemployment.

"This is one problem for which you really need an economist," he said.

Swamy said in jest, "I think Modi has one problem with me. Not only I am an economist but also a politician."
