BJP leaders petition governor against Anti-Corruption Bureau

Bengaluru, Aug 22: The state BJP leaders on Monday complained to Governor Vajubhai Vala against the state government for “misusing” the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) to target its leaders and urged him to order a high-level enquiry into the issue.

Besides, the party urged the Governor to direct the government to immediately suspend Director General of Police (ACB) M N Reddi and remove adviser to Home Minister Kempaiah from his post.

The government has been tapping phone conversations of the Opposition party leaders, booking false cases against them and failed to take action against anti-social elements indulging in the killing of RSS activists, the BJP party leaders stated in a six-page memorandum submitted to the Governor.

The BJP directly charged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with conspiring against his political opponents with the help of the ACB chief and Kempaiah. The ACB has filed cases against BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa, based on a complaint filed by a ‘dubious’ RTI activist with an intention to harass him. The activist’s complaint pertains to denotification of lands meant for the formation of Shivaram Karanth Layout by the BDA. But, Yeddyurappa did not pass any order to denotify the land when he was the chief minister, the memorandum stated.

The government did not issue the final notification for acquiring the land. The High Court of Karnataka quashed the preliminary notification for land acquisition, stating that the scheme formulated by the BDA had lapsed. This shows that there was no administrative lapse during Yeddyurappa’s tenure as the chief minister. “Despite these legal & factual aspects and High Court orders, the ACB, under political dictum, has decided to proceed against former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa solely to tarnish his image in public (sic),” the memorandum said.

The BJP leaders said that the ACB officials, including J K Anthony John, Balaraj and Manjunath, tried to force KAS officer Basavarajendra to issue a false statement to implicate Yeddyurappa. The ACB officials made the KAS officer an accused in the case as he refused to heed to their demands. “This is a shocking misuse of the ACB by the chief minister, who is incidentally heading the ACB,” the saffron party charged.

Earlier, the BJP leaders led by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar took out a protest march from Ambedkar statue in front of the Vidhana Soudha to the Raj Bhavan. Almost all the senior BJP leaders, including K S Eshwarappa, took part in the march in a show of unity.

“The entire state is shocked by the way the government is misusing the ACB to fix Yeddyurappa. We have drawn the Governor’s attention in this regard and urged him to take action against the government,” Ananth Kumar told reporters.

Mangaluru, Mar 10: Tension prevailed in the city after an international flyer quarantined at the District Wenlock Hospital walked out of the facility.

The passenger, with a recent travel history to high-risk countries, refused to cooperate with health officials. The day-long drama ended when the district administration intervened and the flyer agreed to get himself re-admitted.

Deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said the passenger had fever and was sent to an isolation ward. “The passenger is cooperating with the treatment and samples have been collected for testing,” she said. The samples will be sent to a testing centre in Bengaluru.

Sources told  that rude behaviour by staff at Mangalore International Airport may have angered the passenger and he walked out of the quarantine facility.

She said if passengers show reluctance to be screened, they should first be counselled and allowed to get themselves admitted to a hospital of their choice with quarantine facility. If they still refuse to cooperate, they will have to be hospitalised forcefully, she added.

Bengaluru, June 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised the Karnataka government for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing the silver jubilee celebrations of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) via a digital platform, he spoke about the Karnataka government's efforts.

He appreciated the work of front-line warriors who are fighting every day in the war against COVID-19 and stressed the need to respect them.

"Doctors and other medical workers are soldiers without wearing the uniform of soldiers. Any kind of attack or violence against them is not acceptable," said Modi.

"There are incidents of violence against the front-line warriors. Any kind of abuse, violence or rude behaviour is not acceptable. The world is looking at doctors and medical staff with gratitude," he said.

"This is the biggest crisis since the two World Wars," the prime minister said. "Pre- and post-COVID-19, the world will be different. The discussions now at a global level are humanity-centric."

Stressing the importance of medical infrastructure, the prime minister spoke about the decision taken by the Union Government to set up a medical college in every district.

"A nation like ours has to have the medical infrastructure and medical education. Now, every district is going to have a medical college," he said.

However, the PM remained silent on salaries of front-line warriors. The Karnataka government has so far not released the salaries of doctors, nurses and lab technicians hired under National Health Mission.

New Delhi, Mar 3: Delhi's Tihar Prison authorities had made all necessary preparations for the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape-and-murder case which was scheduled for Tuesday, officials said Monday.

However, on Monday evening, a city court deferred the hanging till further orders.

Postponing the execution, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana said the hanging cannot be carried out pending disposal of Pawan Gupta's mercy plea before the President, observing any condemned convict must not meet his "Creator" with grievance against courts for not acting fairly on the opportunity to exhaust legal remedies.

"We had made all the necessary arrangements for the execution of the four convicts which was scheduled for Tuesday at 6 AM. Now, the execution has been postponed and we are waiting for the further order by the court," a senior jail official said.

The hanging of the four men -- Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan -- who are lodged in Tihar jail, was fixed for March 3 in Tihar jail on a court order.

"We had checked the ropes. Hangman was called and dummy executions were carried out," another senior jail official said.

Barring Pawan, the other three had in the previous weeks moved curative petitions and mercy pleas which were all dismissed.

The first date of execution -- January 22 -- fixed on January 7 was postponed by the court to February 1. But on January 31, the court indefinitely postponed the hanging. On February 17, the court again issued fresh date for execution of death warrants for March 3 at 6 AM.

The court in its orders observed that the four convicts cannot be hanged since a mercy plea of one or the other convict was pending.
