Bengaluru, Nov 7: Despite losing Mandya Lok Sabha seat in the bypolls, the local BJP office was in a celebratory mood as this was the best ever performance of the party in the district in the Vokkaliga belt, a JDS stronghold.

The Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) candidate L R Shivarame Gowda scored a spectacular victory in Mandya, defeating BJP's Siddaramaiah, a political green horn and former civil servant by 3,24,943 votes.

While Gowda got 5,69,347 votes, Siddaramaiah secured 2,44,404.

Enthused by the party's performance BJP workers were seen congratulating Siddaramaiah and distributing sweets.

The BJP's Karnataka state unit chief B S Yeddyurappa called the party's performance "heartening."

"BJP's performance of polling 2.44 lakh votes in the traditional weak region of Mandya is really heartening. This will enable us to strengthen the party further socially and geographically in the next coming days," he said.

The constituency has strong Vokkaliga presence, the community to which JD(S) supremo and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda belongs.

During campaigning, Congress candidate had openly expressed their opposition to their party's decision to give up the seat to JD(S), as the grand old party too has significant presence in the region.

The by-elections were necessitated as C S Puttaraju of JD(S) resigned as MP on his election to the assembly in May this year.

During the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP candidate B Shivalingaiah secured 86,993 votes.

Bengaluru, May 2: JDS leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy accused the Mandya district administration of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the district and not quarantining 7,000 labourers who arrived here from Mumbai.

"As we know that 16,000 labourers from Mandya were working in Mumbai, out of which 7,000 people have arrived in the district. However, none of them was quarantined properly which is a violation of COVID-19 lockdown," Kumaraswamy told reporters here on Friday.

He claimed the district administration has shown "gross negligence" in their duty in following the procedure of COVID-19 as "one COVID-19 patient's dead body which was brought here from Mumbai has led to more cases in the district and those who accompanied the body have also tested positive for the virus."

Kumaraswamy appealed to the state government to strictly maintain lockdown norms and do not allow any relaxations in view of the rise in COVID-19 cases, stating that "any kind of relaxation could lead to a huge disaster."

Bengaluru, July 23: The Janta Dal (Secular) and Congress that had joined hands together in Karnataka ‘to keep communal forces at bay, have once again turned archrivals. The development comes a year after the collapse of JD(S)-Congress coalition government in the state.

Recently, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah claimed that the Congress would have won at least 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections had it not been for the alliance with the JD(S). In response, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy of the JD(S), who headed the coalition government, blamed the Congress for its many 'conspiracies'.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Kumaraswamy said he was prompted by Siddarmaiah's claims to recall what transpired during the coalition government.

"There will never be a future alliance with Congress," Kumaraswamy declared, in a letter to his party colleagues on Wednesday. He claimed that there were many conspiracies on part of Congress, which led to the fall of the coalition government.
