BJP, TDP officially ink alliance

April 6, 2014

TDPHyderabad, Apr 6: As per the deal, the saffron party would contest five Lok Sabha and 15 Assembly constituencies in Seemandhra and eight parliamentary and 47 Assembly seats in Telangana

A fortnight-long, alliance and seat-sharing exercise came to an end around noon on Sunday with the Telugu Desam conceding to give the Bharatiya Janata Party 47 Assembly and eight Lok Sabha seats in Telangana and 15 and five to contest, respectively, in the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh in the general elections.

TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, flanked by BJP national spokesperson Prakash Javdekar and BJP treasurer Piyush Goyal and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) co-convenor and Shiromani Akali Dal MP, Naresh Gujral, announced the TDP’s re-entry into the NDA. Others present included Y. Ramakrishnudu of the TDP and while senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya was present, the absence of the BJP’s Telangana State President G. Kishan Reddy was conspicuous.

When asked about Mr. Reddy’s resentment over certain seats, specially in and around Hyderabad being taken by the TDP, Mr. Javdekar said there was nothing like that. “You will joint campaigns being rolled out soon. We are a democratic party and all of BJP is committed,” he quipped, appearing to dismiss the very idea that Mr. Reddy could be out.

Elections to 119 assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana are scheduled for April 30, while 175 assembly and 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in Seemandhra will go to the hustings on May 7. The breakthrough in alliance talks came on Saturday night at a city hotel after top leader of the TDP and BJP intervened, to smoothen things out.

The two parties reached the agreement as the delay was leading to rebellion in both the camps. Even as the formal announcement was being made, there was slogan-shouting by TDP cadres outside Mr. Naidu’s residence. Among constituencies from where cadres protested were those seeking the TDP ticket for Bonda Umamaheswara Rao from Vijayawada Central and from Malkajgiri, that sitting Medak MLA of the TDP, Mynampalli Hanumantha Rao.

Mr. Naidu, Mr. Javdekar and Goyal hailed the alliance as one that would usher in a ‘corruption-free, Congress-free India’ and put the great nation on the international map. “Any small problems posed by voices of dissent and disappointment will be smoothened out,” they chorused, adding that now was the time to prepare for the electoral battle to throw the Congress out.

Mr. Naidu said the agenda at the end of the day was corruption-free governance that would propel India forward, fast-enough to make up for the 10-year slag, thanks to the United Progressive Alliance rule. “Our aim is to provide a stable and efficient Government and honest administration. I am confident that the NDA will end up with 300-plus Lok Sabha seats,” he said, to applause.

Feb 26: In his first reaction to incidents of violence in Delhi which have left at least 20 people dead, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed for peace and brotherhood, and said he has held an extensive review of the prevailing situation in various parts of the national capital.

He also said it was important that calm and normalcy was restored at the earliest.

“Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy,” Modi tweeted.

Stressing that peace and harmony are “central to our ethos”, Modi said, “I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times.”

At least 20 people have been killed since Sunday in communal violence in Northeast Delhi, triggered after clashes between pro and anti-CAA protestors over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

New Delhi, May 26: As India ranked 10th in the global infection list, overtaking Iran, which was an early hotspot of coronavirus, India's top medical body has said the human trials of COVID-19 vaccine may begin at least in six months.

Dr. Rajni Kant, Director Regional Medical Research Centre and Head at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said, "The virus strain isolated at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) laboratory in Pune will be used to develop the vaccine, and this strain has been successfully transferred to the Bharat Biotech International Ltd. (BBIL). It is expected that the human trials of the vaccine will begin in at least six months."

Queried on the focus areas as India inches closer to 1.4 lakh COVID-19 cases, Kant said we should not get anxious about the rapid increase in numbers, especially in the past week, which saw 5,000 Covid-19 cases daily, instead focus on protecting the most vulnerable group.

"We should not fear from increasing Covid-19 cases. The elderly and people with comorbidities need protection. This is the highly vulnerable group, and we need to deploy resources and develop strategies to keep the mortality rate as low as possible in this group," said Kant.

Initially, it was assumed that the country would require thousands of ventilators, but last week, the health ministry said only 0.45 per cent of COVID-19 cases need ventilator support.

Kant insisted the focus should be on five per cent to 10 per cent serious patients. "We are testing more than one lakh daily and our case fatality rate is already one of the lowest in the world. In absence of vaccine, people should follow social distancing guidelines," he added

On the significance of the recovery rate, Kant said the increasing recovery rate of the COVID-19 patients, which is at 41 per cent, is a bright spot in India's fight against deadly viral infection.

Queried on large scale COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad, Kant said the population density in these regions is very high, which proves to be the just right environment for the viral infection.

He insisted on developing robust cluster management strategies in the hard-hit coronavirus spots, and the movement of people should be curtailed in these areas.

"Currently, a lot of people are moving around easily and avoiding social distancing norms. The first phase of the lockdown was very effective, but now things have changed," added Kant.
