BJP using Hinduism as a badge of political identity: Tharoor

August 15, 2014

Shashi TharoorMumbai, Aug 15: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has attacked the BJP-led government at the Centre over the alleged "systematic increase" in cases of communal violence since the party came to power and accused it of using Hinduism as a badge of political identity to fit their "political agenda".

"The communal violence debate in Parliament from the last couple of days was a serious attempt by my party to highlight the fact that in last 11 weeks since they (BJP) have come to power...we have seen a systematic increase in communal violence, an increase in polarisation of communities, particularly acute in places in UP which are going for by-elections. This is clearly a political agenda," he charged.

The Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram was addressing students here yesterday at the student-conference of St Xavier's annual inter-college festival "Malhar".

On performance of the Narendra Modi government, the former Union Minister said it shows that there is minimum governance when it comes to protecting the "aam aadmi" (common man).

"So far judging by what has happened in the last couple of months, judging by the communal riots we have seen rising, and by the silence of the Prime Minister on some very serious and disturbing issues, it really looks like we have minimum governance when it comes to protecting the 'aam aadmi' and maximum government when it comes to consolidating power in one person's hand...That is the worry," he said.

"There is always a political agenda behind saffronisation ...It is to serve the political interest of a particular party and its fellow travellers...I have a problem with people using Hinduism as a badge of political identity. They say vote for us and we will protect you as a Hindu...They (BJP) are trying to create this polarisation," he alleged.

Tharoor also criticised the maiden budget of the NDA government and said allocating Rs 100 crore for women's security means nothing if fundamental issues are not addressed.

"You had those 100 crore sops in the budget.. You can't give a 100 crore for women's security.. There are fundamental issues and challenges of women's security since the tragic rape in Delhi a year and a half ago...We really need to see major steps not a 100 crore allocation," he said.

The story of the next five years is going to be the story of the Modi government failing to live up to the expectations that his campaigns had raised in this country. The expectations are essentially almost magical, he said.

"If you look at the last 10 years (of the UPA rule) about one per cent of the Indian population has been pulled out from below the poverty line every year. That is our achievement," he added.

New Delhi, Jul 22: Congress leader Sachin Pilot has served a legal notice to party MLA Giriraj Malinga, for claiming that the former had offered him money to join the BJP.

"Former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot has served a legal notice to Congress MLA Giriraj Malinga for his Rs 35 crore bribery allegation," a source close to Pilot said.
P
Earlier, addressing a press conference, Malinga said, "Those MLAs who are stuck either in Haryana or Jaipur, are running after money. To say, they are not, are false claims. Even I was offered the same by Pilot, which I had refused. Came to this party knowing BJP and Congress do not accept money to give tickets."

When asked by the reporters whether he was offered Rs 35 crore, he claimed by saying, "Yes, 35." The MLA claimed he was himself the prove when the reporters asked for the same.

The political situation in Rajasthan is in turmoil after Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot sacked his then-deputy Sachin Pilot and the latter's confidants from his council of ministers. The Congress has also claimed that BJP was trying to buy its party MLAs.

On Monday, the Rajasthan High Court had said that it would hear the petition filed by Pilot and 18 of his loyalist MLAs on July 24, against the disqualification notices issued against them, a lawyer said.

"The arguments in the matter have been concluded. The court has heard the arguments from all the parties. The High Court has slated the matter for orders on July 24," Advocate Prateek Kasliwal told reporters after the hearing.

New Delhi, Apr 21: Tablighi Jamaat leader Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, who has been booked by the Delhi Police for holding a religious congregation here during the lockdown, on Monday urged the followers of the organisation to pray at home in the month of Ramzan.

"I request all, both in India and abroad, to strictly follow the guidelines and instructions of the local or national governments and till the time restrictions are in place and please observe prayers at home. And even in this, we should not invite people from outside," he said in a statement.

Ramzan begins later this week.

While addressing an online briefing on Sunday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal cited the Tablighi Jamaat congregation last month, a major hotspot, and the large inflow of travellers from other countries to Delhi as the reasons for the spread of the virus, and said the city was "fighting a difficult battle".

The Delhi Police crime branch, had on March 31, lodged an FIR against seven people, including the cleric, on a complaint by the Station House Officer of Nizamuddin police station for holding the congregation in alleged violation of the orders against large gatherings to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Later, the Indian Penal Code Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was added to the FIR.

The cleric is wanted by the Delhi Police and he responded twice to them. He is currently under home quarantine.

In an audio message released earlier this month, Kandhalvi had said he was exercising self-quarantine after several hundreds who visited the congregation at Nizamudddin Markaz tested positive for coronavirus.
