Bengaluru, Oct 7: The Karnataka BJP has welcomed holding simultaneous polls for Lok Sabha and assemblies. The Election Commission of India had informed the Centre that it will be “logistically equipped” by September 2018 to hold simultaneous polls.

BJP state spokesperson S Suresh Kumar told reporters in Bengaluru on Friday that parties across the political spectrum can hold a comprehensive discussion on putting in place a system of holding simultaneous polls and come to a unanimous decision in this regard.

Era of mid-term elections

The next Assembly elections in the state will have to be held by May next year, while the current Lok Sabha has a tenure till May 2019.

Kumar pointed out that Assembly elections in a majority of the states were held simultaneously with Lok Sabha elections till 1967. Then the era of mid-term elections started. Kumar said simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and the state Assembly in Karnataka were also held in 1999 and 2004.

He said in the first phase, all state assemblies whose tenure is nearing an end can be tagged along with the Lok Sabha elections.

He said doubts and apprehensions can be resolved through discussions. All political parties can be taken into confidence before taking a final decision.

Parivarthan Rath Yatra

BJP state General Secretary and former minister Shobha Karandlaje has been appointed as convenor of the BJP’s Nava Karnataka Parivarthan Rath Yatra.

Shobha is known for her organisational skills and has looked after the logistics of several political rallies. The Parivarthan Yatra, to expose the “misdeeds” of the state government is the state BJP’s most ambitious yet.

Suresh Kumar said the yatra for southern districts of the state will be launched on November 2 in Bengaluru. For northern districts, the yatra will be launched in Hubballi later.

Belagavi, Feb 24: Almost a month after a soldier was reported missing following a trip to Gokak's Godchinamalaki falls, his wife and her lover - who was her car driver - were arrested in Belagavi for his murder.

Police said the accused, Prashant Patil, and two friends tried to throw Deepak Pattanadara, 32, off a cliff after slitting his throat. Deepak's wife, Anjali, had registered a missing case with police on February 4, saying her husband had gone on a trip with friends on January 28 and hadn't returned.

In a twist, Deepak's elder brother lodged a complaint at the same police station, alleging that Anjali was behind the disappearance.

Anjali and Prashant, both 26, were arrested on Saturday while Prashant's two friends are absconding. Deepak's decomposed body has been recovered.

Deepak, who was posted in Delhi and was on the verge of retirement after 14 years in the army, had suspected his wife's alleged affair, police said. He'd bought a car for Anjali in 2019, and since he was home only twice a year, he hired Prashant as the driver. Anjali and Prashant grew close but when Deepak asked Anjali about the affair, she denied it outright.

When Deepak came home during vacation, the duo planned to eliminate him, police said.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: The COVID-19 count in Karnataka went up by 10 on Wednesday, reaching 51. The 10 new positives included two girls aged seven and nine who contracted the infection from their father.

The 34-year-old man had returned from Amsterdam on March 19 and tested positive as the 17th confirmed case in Karnataka.

Though his family were kept in isolation and under quarantine in their house, the children developed a cold. They were confirmed for COVID-19 infection while their mother is still negative.

The government remained tightlipped over whether or not a 70-year-old woman from Gouribidanuru who was put under house quarantine and died on Wednesday morning, tested positive for COVID-19. Government officials would neither confirm nor deny anything on the results of tests on the woman.

This evening’s bulletin issued by the Karnataka health department continued to indicate the strong correlation of coronavirus infection and foreign travel.

Among the positive cases identified today were

A 63-year-old Bengaluru man and his 59-year-old wife, with a history of travel to Brazil and Argentina.
Two 26-year-old men with a history of travel to Spain and arrived back in Bengaluru via Dubai.
Two others, a 63-year-old woman and her 69-year-old husband, had a history of travel to Athens and London.
A 34-year-old man, a resident of Udupi, who returned from Dubai
A 37-year old woman, a resident of Chitradurga, with a history of travel to Guyana and arrived back in Bengaluru via Delhi
Speaking to the media, medical education minister K Sudhakar said health officials were apprehensive the positives may go up tonight.

Of the corona positive cases detected in Karnataka so far, three have been discharged after quarantine, and 47 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals in a stable condition. There has been one fatality.

As per a recommendation by the high-level health committee, the government has decided to convert the Bowring Hospital into a coronavirus treatment hospital facility along with the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital for Chest Diseases and Victoria Hospital.

“The number of positive cases are growing at an alarming rate and the government needs more treatment facilities. The government is for burning of COVID-19 death cases. However, due to some religious practices, it has been decided they would be buried in 8 ft deep pits,'' Dr Sudhakar said.
