Surat, Sep 9: In an extreme embarrassing moment for the Gujarat unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, its show of strength' in historic town of Surat ended abruptly amidst chaos as the supporters of Patidar leader Hardik Patel chanted Jay Sardar Jay Patidar' while going on rampage breaking and throwing chairs and pelting stones at the venue.

The programme was organized by the prominent businessmen of the community to felicitate BJP president Amit Shah, State Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and other Patidar leaders.

The entire event, in which top Patidar leaders like State BJP president Jitu Vaghani, Union Ministers Purushottam Rupala and Mansukh Mandvia and many others were to be felicitated in a bid to project the Patidar community's support to the BJP, had to be wound up in just 45 minutes due to the ruckus despite elaborate security arrangements involving over 1,700 police personnel.

Party president Amit Shah ended his speech in just four minutes and immediately left the venue while other speakers, including CM Vijay Rupani and Union Minister Rupala could not speak for more than five minutes as the chaos and sloganeering continued.

Both Mr. Shah and Mr. Rupani expressed their gratitude to the Patidar community for their “support to the BJP” but did not touch upon the contentious issue of OBC status and quota in education and government jobs that the community has been demanding in the state.

Outside the venue, several vehicles including police vehicles, were vandalised by stone pelting, forcing the authorities to terminate Surat's Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) services in the Patel-dominated areas of the diamond city.

State BJP chief Jitu Vaghani claimed that “only a few dozen people tried to create disturbance but thousands of Patidar community members remained present, which shows their support to the BJP”.

“What happened in Surat reflects the anger of the Patidar community against the BJP in Gujarat,” said Mr. Hardik Patel, who is exiled in Udaipur, while reacting on the events in Surat.

He charged the BJP of playing a “divide and rule” game with the Patidar community in the State.

Kalaburagi, Mar 25: Three coronavirus suspect persons who did not stay home during their mandatory 14-day quarantine period had first information report (FIRs) booked against them in police stations in Kalaburagi town in Karnataka.

The district administration took this action after it came to know that the three pesons were mingling in the public despite being told to stay home to avoid passing on the coronavirus.

Cases have been booked against them under IPC sections 188 and 271, deputy commissioner B Sharath said.

Stringent action would be taken against them, he said, for not only threatening the health of their family members but society at large.

“The administration will stop at nothing to safeguard public health in this time of emergency,” Sharath said.

People moving around on motorbikes without a proper reason will have their bikes seized. Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC will remain in force until further orders, he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 2: Former chief ministers of Karnataka Siddaramaiah and H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he embarked on a two-day visit to the state attend events in Tumakuru and Bengaluru. In a series of tweets, the Congress and the JD(S) leaders took a dig at Modi for his alleged failure on various fronts.

"You did not visit Karnataka when it was devastated by floods, you did not visit Karnataka when our farmers cried for help, but all of a sudden, when you want to launch your political propaganda, you remember the innocent people of Karnataka. Wah Modi Wah!!" Siddaramaiah tweeted.

In another tweet, the Congress leader claimed Karnataka is starved of Central government funds as there were no adequate flood relief, no GST revenue loss compensation and there was a delay in the transfer of grant-in-aid.

He further said, "Before attempting to fool our people, let the people of Karnataka know when they will get their due share!" He also sought to know from Modi why the 25 MPs from Karnataka have 'turned off' their engines.

"With 25 MPs from BJP and a state government with BJP, people hoped for a double engine. Instead, all BJP representatives have turned off their engines and have become sycophants to play a tune to your idiosyncrasies. Why, are they scared of you?" Siddaramaiah said.

Seeking an explanation on various incomplete projects, the Congress leader said, "Mr Narendra Modi, people are fed up of your lies and double-edged sword comments. We want your answer today about long-standing questions on: Kalasa Banduri Yojana, Belagavi border issue, exams in Kannada, Tulu & Kodava in 8th schedule, the list goes on." Kumaraswamy too minced no words as he went on the offensive against the Centre.

In his tweets quoting newspaper reports, he said Karnataka's coffer has dried up, financial position is in doldrums and the revenue has plummeted.

"What's the reason (behind poor economic situation)? The poor economic policies of the Centre. After swallowing the GDP and development of the country, the wrong policies have affected the state too," alleged Kumaraswamy.

Quoting reports, Kumaraswamy said the Centre has denied the state's share of revenue.

"About 5.44 per cent of state's share is yet to come from the Centre. This is step-motherly attitude of the Centre towards the state," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

Bengaluru, Jul 23: The Siddi community in Karnataka got its first lawmaker as Governor Vajubhai Vala nominated five persons, including Shantharama Budna Siddi, to the Karnataka Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Shantharama Siddi had been working as a social worker and was a post holder at the Vanavasi Kalyan Prakalpa, a tribal welfare initiative of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Siddis, an ethnic group in India, are said to have descended from the people of the East African region. They are included in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Karnataka.

Apart from the Shantharama, the inclusion of CP Yogishwar, who had left Congress to join BJP in 2017 but failed to retain his seat in the 2018 Assembly polls, is also considered as a big decision.

Adagur H Vishwanath, another former JDS leader, who had quit his party and joined BJP but failed to retain his seat has also caught the attention of the people.

Further, Governor Vala has nominated Talwar Sabanna and Bharathi Shetty to the Upper House in the state.
