Body of Jasprit Bumrah's grandfather found in river; suicide

Ahmedabad, Dec 10: The body of Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah's grandfather was today found in the Sabarmati river here, two days after he had gone missing, in what police suspect is a case of suicide.

Santok Singh Bumrah's body was fished out from the river this morning, Dharmendra Singh Solanki, Police Station Officer of the Sabarmati Riverfront (East) police station, told PTI.

The police suspect Santok Bumrah, 84, committed suicide.
His daughter-in-law Rajinder Bumrah had filed a missing person's complaint on Friday at the Vastrapur police station here, Solanki said.

According to the complaint, Santok Bumrah had come to Ahmedabad from Uttarakhand on December 1 to meet Jasprit Bumrah, but he had gone missing on Friday night after he left their house at Vastrapur without informing the family members, the official said.

According to Solanki, this appears to be a case of suicide and a probe is on.

"We have sent the body to the civil hospital for post-mortem and have registered a case of accidental death," the officer added.

The 24-year-old Ahmedabad-born pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, a regular in One Day Internationals and T20s for India, was recently picked in the squad for Test series against South Africa beginning next month.

Hamilton, Jan 30: Caught unaware about the Super Over scenario, Rohit Sharma took five minutes to “find” his abdomen guard after the third T20 International against New Zealand had ended in a tie on Wednesday.

The India vice-captain said the team had almost given up with New Zealand going great guns at one point.

“Everything was packed. All my stuff was inside my bag. I had to get it out. It literally took me five minutes to find my abdomen guard because I didn’t know where it was,” Rohit said.

“I mean we never thought it would go to the Super Over, the way they were batting at one point. It looked like they could easily win the game,” he added.

Yavatmal, May 19: Four migrant workers were killed and 15 others were injured after a bus they were travelling in crashed into a truck in Yavatmal on Tuesday morning.

The bus was travelling from Solapur to Jharkhand. More details are currently awaited.

This comes amid nationwide COVID-19 lockdown has been extended to May 31, albeit with some relaxations.

The West Bengal government has suspended two women teachers in East Burdwan district on the charge of teaching pre-primary students from an English alphabet book consisting of a portion derogatory to the people with a dark complexion.

While presenting the alphabets with corresponding words and images, the book says U is for "Ugly". The illustration printed beside the letter is that of a boy with a dark complexion.

"The book is not part of the textbooks referred by the education department. It was introduced by the school itself. We have zero-tolerance for acts which instil prejudices into the minds of students," Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters here on Thursday.

He said the two teachers of a local municipality-run school have been placed under suspension with immediate effect based on a preliminary investigation and stricter action would be taken against them later.

Though the school is now closed because of the lockdown, the matter came to light when the father of a student of the school was teaching him with the help of that book. He informed other parents and the education department was apprised of the issue, sources said.
