Brahmins hold Yaga; kill animals, consume meat along with soma rasa'

May 4, 2016

Shivamogga, May 4:?In an incident that has sent shock waves, eight goats were sacrificed by a section of Sankethi Brahmins at Soma Yaga at Srikantapura on the outskirts of Mattur, in Shivamogga taluk, recently.

sacrificeThe animal sacrifice was made at the six-day yaga held from April 22 for public welfare. After performing the puja, the goats with their mouths tied were sacrificed near the fire altar (agni kunda). Later, parts of the goats were chopped off and sacrificed in the fire. The chief priest who took part in the yaga ate the meat, after consuming Soma Rasa.' As many as 17 priests from different parts of the country, including Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, took part in the ritual.

Organisers of the yaga claimed that animals were sacrificed to appease gods during the Vedic period. Lord Rama had organised such rituals and there is reference to it in Ramayana, a great epic. However, another section of the community described it as an unfortunate incident as Sankethis follow the Advaitha philosophy, which treats sacrifice as an evil practice.

Noted critic Ramachandran, who is a Sankethi, said it was inhuman and gods do not expect animal sacrfice. All religions advocate love and sympathy and not cruelty in the name of religious rituals, he said.

Another senior leader of the community, on condition of anonymity, expressed his displeasure that D?Sanathkumar, who holds a PhD in Sanskrit, had organised such an event.

Dr Sanathkumar, the organiser of the yaga, said: “I don't want to issue any statement. I am not the spokesperson of the community. The discussion on the issue is unwarraned.”

A similar sacrifice was made in the village several years ago to weaken an influential leader when S M Krishna was the chief minister.

At that time, hundreds of goats were sacrificed. Ren-owned Gamaki, the late Mattur Krishnamurthy, who belongs to Sankethi community, had opposed it. Around Rs 50 lakh is said to have been spent on the yaga.

Eid al-Adha also called the \Sacrifice Feast\" or \"Bakr-Eid\", is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year, and considered the holiest of the two. It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, as an act of submission to God's command, before God then intervened, through his angel Jibra'il (Gabriel) and informs him that his sacrifice has already been accepted. The meat from the sacrificed animal is preferred to be divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share

Bengaluru, Feb 28: The Liquefied Petroleum Gas penetration in Karnataka is 'absolutely 100 per cent' due to the Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana, Indian Oil Corporation Karnataka Executive Director D L Pramodh said here on Friday.

In 2014, LPG penetration in the State was only 68 per cent, but after the PMUY, massive number of gas connections were given in the last five years, he said, adding, "It is absolutely 100 per cent today."

"There are 1.6 crore LPG connections out of which around 31.5 lakh -- or around 20 per cent -- come under the PMUY. The 100 per cent LPG penetration in the state will help women in rural areas to make their kitchens smokeless. Against the national average of 2.88 cylinders per family per PMUY annually, the figure is Karnataka 3.4 cylinders in Karnataka," Pramodh told reporters.

On the initiative of blending ethanol with petrol, he said it's 8.6 per cent in Karnataka, the highest comparedto other states, where it's five per cent to 5.5 per cent. The state aims to increase it to 10 per cent. By March 31, the IOC would commission the Rs 10 crore Vapour Recovery System at the Devanagonthi terminal on the city outskirts which would ensure that vapour does not go out in the air when tankers are being filled with fuel. "This is an important measure taken tominimise pollution", he said.

Pramodh also said the IOC has started mobile fuel dispensers, delivering fuels at the doorsteps.

Regarding the IOC's preparedness for Electric Vehicle charging stations, Pramodh said the Ministry of Power has given the company a target to set up 500 charging stations across India in the first phase. The IOC has already signed MoUs with NTPC, Power Grid Corporation Limited, Hyundai Motors, Tech Mahindra and Tata Power in this regard.

In Karnataka, 58 sites have been identified for setting up charging and battery swapping stations.

"Total electric vehicle charging facilities planned by IOC in Karnataka by March 31 is 34, out of which 26 will be EVcharging sites and eight battery swapping stations," Pramodh said.

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Against the backdrop of Mangalore violence of December 19, Additional Director General of Police of Karnataka Amar Kumar Pandey visited the city and held a meeting with senior police officers.

According to senior police officials here on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee had planned to hold a protest against CAA at Nehru Maidan while the SKSSF had called for anti-CAA protest at State Bank area.

Though both the protests had been called off, there was an apprehension of a repeat incident of December 19 violence and hence the ADGP visited the city at the behest of state government and monitored the situation here for the entire day on Saturday.

The ADGP was unhappy that despite initial inputs and the imposition of Section 144 in the city, the situation on that day escalated to a level where police had to resort to firing only in this city.
