New Delhi, Dec 12: Still two short of a simple majority to form a government in Madhya Pradesh, Congress on Wednesday breathing easy with BSP chief Mayawati announcing the support of her party’s two MLAs to it.

Hours before Congress meeting Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel to stake claim to form the government, Mayawati announced that despite her differences with the ideology of Congress, her party will support it in government formation as people have voted against the saffron party and the primary objective is to stop the march of BJP.

Congress, which has already won 114 of 230 assembly seats in a nail-biting electoral contest, can now relax as Samajwadi Party, which has won one seat, has also announced its intent to support them. In total, Congress will have 117 legislators supporting its bid to power.

Besides, all the four independents are either Congress rebels or were somehow connected well with the party.

After this, the option of  Governor Anandiben Patel, who was formerly BJP Chief Minister of Gujarat, is further limited as the general norm anyway is to invite the single largest party to form a government if there was no pre-poll alliance.

BJP, which has won 109 seats was also asserting that it has the backing of independents and will stake claim to form government hours after Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath last night wrote to Governor staking claim to form the government.

Mayawati’s assertion could be dampening for BJP.

“Our party fought the election to keep BJP out of power. People in Madhya Pradesh have rejected the BJP in these elections but BJP is still trying to form a government.  So despite not agreeing with the ideology of Congress, BSP has decided to support it for government formation in Madhya Pradesh. If Congress requires BJP is ready to support Congress in government formation even in Rajasthan to checkmate the BJP,” Mayawati said.

BSP has won two assembly seats each in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and six seats in Rajasthan.

While Congress has won over a two-thirds majority in 68 out of 90 seats Chhattisgarh, it has won 99 of 199 seats in Rajasthan.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 29: With Saudi Arabia indefinitely suspending visas for visit to Islam's holiest site for the Umrah pilgrimage in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, more than 10,000 people in the state who are awaiting their turn this year for the annual Hajj pilgrimage are a worried lot.

"This year more than 10,000 people in Kerala have been cleared by the Hajj committee," said C Muhammed Faizy, chairman, Kerala State Hajj Committee.

"There is no cause of worry. We hope that during the time of the pilgrimage, the travel restriction by Saudi Arabia will be lifted," he said.

Umrah is a pilgrimage to the holy site that can be undertaken at any time of the year, while the annual Hajj pilgrimage has specific months according to the lunar calendar.

"The move by the Saudi Arabian Government to impose travel restriction was due to the outbreak of coronavirus. It is a preventive step to contain it. In such large gatherings, if one person is affected, it will spread to others. So we fully understand the concerns of the Saudi Government," Muhammed Faizy added.

He said that the Hajj Committee only processes the requests of annual Hajj visit pilgrims and not Umrah.

"This year we expect the Hajj pilgrimage season to be from June to August after Ramzan. But it may vary according to the Ramzan date. We are yet to get any official correspondence from the Saudi Government regarding travel restrictions," he added.

The Saudi Arabian Government suspended visas for tourists from countries affected by the coronavirus, with many having to cancel their Umrah pilgrimage at the last minute.

New Delhi, Mar 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “destabilising” the elected Congress government in Madhya Pradesh.

Gandhi also said the PM may have “missed” noticing the 35 per cent crash in global oil prices and asked him to pass on the benefit to Indians by slashing petrol prices.

“Hey @PMOIndia, while you were busy destabilising an elected Congress Govt, you may have missed noticing the 35 per cent crash in global oil prices.

“Could you please pass on the benefit to Indians by slashing #petrol prices to under 60 per litre? Will help boost the stalled economy,” the former Congress chief said on twitter.

Congress' prominent youth leader Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the party on Tuesday and appeared set to join the BJP amid a rebellion in Madhya Pradesh by his supporters, pushing the 15-month-old Kamal Nath government to the brink of collapse.

On Tuesday morning, as much of India was celebrating Holi, Scindia met senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, following which he called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence.
