BSY to contest from North Karnataka instead of Shikaripura in 2018

Bengaluru, Sep 17: Karnataka BJP president B S Yeddyurappa will contest from North Karnataka instead of Shikaripura in the 2018 assembly polls, his media adviser said today.

The former chief minister took this decision in the interest of the party after the central leadership suggested him to contest from North Karnataka, the Lingayat Leader's Media Advisor Anand Vijayender told PTI here.

However, no decision has been taken about the assembly constituency from which he will contest, Vijayender said.

"Yedduyurappa readily gave in to the central leadership's suggestion as his interests are in line with the BJP's," he said.

According to political observers, the decision of Yeddyurappa to contest from North Karnataka is to counter the Congress' strategy to divide Lingayat votes by raising the issue of separate religion tag to Lingayats.

A majority of the Lingayat community resides in northern parts of Karnataka and mostly vote for the BJP in assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Shikaripura, which falls in Shimoga district of Central Karnataka, has been Yeddyurappa's bastion for long.

He has won the Shikaripura seat since its conversion from reserve constituency to general category from 1983 for six times up to 2008, when he bagged the seat with a huge margin against political stalwart and former chief minister late S Bangarappa, except in 1999.

Udupi, Jan 8: Senior journalist Raviraj Valalambe passed away due to suspected cardiac arrest on Tuesday night at his residence in Kinnimulki, here. He was 50.

Raviraj was rushed to a hospital after he complained of chest pain. He breathed his last on way to medical facility.

He was the director of Prime TV, a local Kannada news channel.

He had worked as a reporter for ETV and Suvarna News channel earlier.

He is survived by wife and two daughters.

Chengdu, China, Jul 27: The American flag was lowered at the United States consulate in Chengdu on Monday, days after Beijing ordered it to close in retaliation for the shuttering of the Chinese consulate in Houston.

Footage on state broadcaster CCTV from outside the consulate showed the flag being slowly lowered early Monday morning, after diplomatic tensions soared between the two powers with both alleging the other had endangered national security.

Relations deteriorated in recent weeks in a Cold War-style standoff, with the Chengdu mission Friday ordered to shut in retaliation for the forced closure of Beijing's consulate in Houston, Texas.

The deadline for the Americans to exit Chengdu has been unclear, but the Chinese consulate in Houston was given 72 hours to close after the original order was made.

On Saturday news agency reporters saw workers removing the US insignia from the front of the consulate.

Over the weekend, removals trucks entered the US consulate and cleaners were seen carting large black rubbish bags from the building.

Beijing says closing the Chengdu consulate was a "legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable measures by the United States", and has alleged that staff at the diplomatic mission endangered China's security and interests.

Washington officials, meanwhile, said there had been unacceptable efforts by the Chinese consulate in Houston to steal US corporate secrets.

Ballari, Apr 18: Hosapete town in Ballari district of Karnataka gasped in disbelief as it turned out that 11 members of one single family are positive for the coronavirus.

The whole town has been declared a containment zone and is being surveilled 24X7.

The family includes seven members whose tests returned positive today, three who tested Covid-19 positive on March 30 and one other member subsequently.

The seven who tested positive today had been negative when they were earlier tested along with the others.

They have all now been shifted to isolation wards at the District Hospital in Ballari.

Including this family of 11, Ballari has 13 positive cases so far, with one case each reported from Ballari and Siraguppa towns.

Startled by this sudden upsurge from Hosapete, the district administration has set up 16 fever clinics to screen people and six COVID care centres to treat positive cases. There are two dedicated COVID hospitals, one at Ballari and another at Torangallu in Sandur.

A team of psychological counsellors have been put on duty to provide support to the patients at the isolation centres.
