Mangaluru, Apr 4: A buffer zone likely to be created between Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd and Jokatte village in order to find a solution to the air pollution in the region.

MRPLDeputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim has directed the Forest and the Survey departments to jointly survey the land between MRPL's coke and sulphur units and the Jokatte area for creation of a buffer zone.

At a meeting Mr. Ibrahim sought the cooperation of the residents and MRPL for the creation of the buffer zone where saplings would have to be planted.

This buffer zone alone would solve the problem faced by Jokatte residents because of the black ash and sound from MRPL, he said.

Mr. Ibrahim asked the representatives of the two departments to carry out the survey work by involving representatives of people from Jokatte.

He said that if need be, land could be acquired by paying compensation.

MRPL's managing director H. Kumar said that structural and technological changes had been brought in to address the problem of pollution from the coke and sulphur units. Changes could be seen in the next two years.

He said planting of saplings were being done in 83 acres of MRPL area, he said.

Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports K. Abhayachandra Jain and Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava also attended the meeting.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: Mahesh Vikram Hegde, the co-founder of website 'Postcard News', known for spreading fake news on behalf of Sangh Parivar, was taken aback when he was asked to sing 'Vande Mataram' to prove his patriotism by a group of women activists at Mangaluru International Airport.

The video of the incident which occurred on Friday, days after editor-in-chief and co-founder of Republic TV Arnab Goswami was heckled by comedian Kunal Kamra on a flight, went viral on social media within hours.

Hegde was spotted by social activist Kavitha Reddy, and other young orators – Najma Nazeer and Amulya Leona – at the airport where he was waiting to board a plane to Bengaluru.

In a video, the three women are seen coercing Hegde to sing 'Vande Mataram' and prove his patriotism. In another video being circulated, the women are heard telling the journalist that he is getting an opportunity to become a 'hero' from 'zero' if he sings 'Vande Mataram.' However, he refused to open his mouth.

Reddy is seen asking Hegde whether he knew the time when Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.

Hegde was arrested in 2018 for posting a fake news aimed at creating communal conflict.

Udupi, Jun 9: A Mesolithic site has been discovered at Iduru-Kunjadi in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district of Karnataka by Prof T Murugeshi, Associate Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology at MSRS College, Shirva.

Prof Murugeshi said on Tuesday that the site is near a rock art site of the Mesolithic period that was unearthed. It is located in the Mookambika Wildlife Reserve Forest. At Iduru-Kunjadi, the finds of Mesolithic tools are characterised by blades, scrapers, burine, fluted cores, arrow-heads and flakes of the non-geometric pattern.

He said that though the site was found two years back, it took time to study and identify them. They resembled the tools found in a stratified context at Uppinangady on the Netravati basin, he added.
