Bengaluru, Apr 15: An 18-year-old PU student lost his life on Thursday morning after being hit by a car driven by a 56-year-old woman who lost control of the vehicle, hit the median, went over to the other side of the road and collided with an oncoming scooter.

The accident occurred at Kempapura Hebbal Junction near Kodigehalli Gate.

The scooter was being driven by Aravind Muralidharan, a second-year PU student of Presidency College in Kempapura and a resident of Ganganagar in R.T. Nagar. Another two-wheeler rider was badly injured.

According to the police, the accident happened between 9.15 and 9.30 a.m. on the busy international airport road diagonally opposite Columbia Asia hospital.

The car driver, Anita Sen, was going from Yelahanka New Town to her office in Cox Town. She is a graphic designer.

Sen was also injured and admitted to Columbia Asia Hospital. The police are waiting for her to recover before questioning her. “She is in a state of shock,” a source in the police said.

What happened

According to witness accounts, Sen was manoeuvring her car from the service road on to the main road near the ramp in Kempapura when she lost control of the vehicle. She rammed into the median, but the car did not stop on impact. Instead, it crossed over to the other side and collided with Aravind's bike.

Aravind sustained grievous head injuries and was rushed to Columbia Asia Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

When hit by the speeding car, his bike was tossed in the air. On landing, it hit another two-wheeler driven by Vijay Hiremath (40), a contractor. Vijay sustained multiple fractures.

“All the three vehicles were badly damaged. The motorists following Aravind and Vijay had a narrow escape,” a senior police officer said.

Woman booked

The Hebbal traffic police have registered a case against Anita Sen under Section 304A (death due to negligence) and Section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code.

“We have registered a case of causing death by negligence and rash driving on a public highway against the car driver. We are in the process of scrutinising the licences and other documents of the driver and riders of the three vehicles involved in the accident,” said Renuka Sukumaran, DCP North Division (Traffic).

Traffic movement on the busy Ballari Road was disrupted for about an hour after the accident.
