Caste written on police recruits in Madhya Pradesh, probe ordered

Bhopal, Apr 30: Writing caste on the chest seems to be the new method of ‘categorisation’ of police recruits in Madhya Pradesh. Castes written on the chests of the new police constables during their medical examination the district hospital was reported from Dhar district, 60 km from Indore.Only after favourable medical test and character certification will these newly recruited constables undergo training for being permanently employed with the district police force and the special armed force (SAF) of the MP police.

With the height parameters differing for General, OBC, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, the on duty police staff and the hospital staff found the bizarre way to identify the caste of the newly recruited constables.

The caste was written as Gen, SC, ST, OBC on the chests of these young men, only to cause a huge embarrassment for the state police and the medical and health department later. The episode comes just 26 days after the state burnt in caste violence which resulted in seven deaths, including six Dalits.

Using the caste category written on chests, the hospital staff measured the height as per requisite height parameters specified for their caste segments. Importantly, as per the recruitment norms, 168 cm is the minimum height stipulated for the General and OBC candidates, while 165 cm is the minimum height required for SCs/STs for recruitment in the district police force and the special armed force. On Sunday, home minister Bhupendra Singh hurriedly ordered an enquiry into the entire episode. SP, Dhar, Virendra Singh and chief medical health officer Dr RC Panika too ordered separate probe and promised to take strict action against those found responsible.

“It is a serious matter and we have ordered investigation. No such instruction was given from the police to mention the caste of the candidates on their chests,” the Dhar SP said.Singh said those conducting the medical examination process had told police that the markings were made to tell apart candidates belonging to different categories as the physical requirements for each of these categories were different.     “However, they should have used other ways to differentiate. This is a serious matter.” the senior police officer said.

It’s not the first time that such a faux pass has happened in MP. In December 2017, stickers were pasted on the foreheads of women awaiting sterilization at Burhanpur district hospital to differentiate which women had Caesarian operation in the past. Similarly, on Raksha Bandhan in August 207, two children who came to meet their relative at Bhopal’s Central Jail were stamped with the jail’s official seal on their cheeks by the jail staff.

New Delhi, Mar 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “destabilising” the elected Congress government in Madhya Pradesh.

Gandhi also said the PM may have “missed” noticing the 35 per cent crash in global oil prices and asked him to pass on the benefit to Indians by slashing petrol prices.

“Hey @PMOIndia, while you were busy destabilising an elected Congress Govt, you may have missed noticing the 35 per cent crash in global oil prices.

“Could you please pass on the benefit to Indians by slashing #petrol prices to under 60 per litre? Will help boost the stalled economy,” the former Congress chief said on twitter.

Congress' prominent youth leader Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the party on Tuesday and appeared set to join the BJP amid a rebellion in Madhya Pradesh by his supporters, pushing the 15-month-old Kamal Nath government to the brink of collapse.

On Tuesday morning, as much of India was celebrating Holi, Scindia met senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, following which he called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence.

New Delhi, Jan 22: The BJP on Wednesday cited statements of several opposition leaders to accuse them of "abusing" Hindus for their appeasement politics and referred to the Congress as "Muslim League Congress".

Seeking apologies from Congress president Sonia Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said leaders of these parties have used the ongoing protests against the amended citizenship law to "abuse" Hindus.

Chavan has said in a public meeting that the Congress decided to join hands with the Shiv Sena to form government in Maharashtra as Muslims wanted the party to stop the BJP, Patra stated, claiming that it shows the opposition party has nothing to do with people belonging to other religions, including Hindus.

Patra also referred to a statement from an NCP leader to attack the opposition.

Asked about Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's reported jibe at the RSS for its "non-participation" in the freedom movement, the BJP leader shot back, asking if parents of Sonia Gandhi, who is of Italian origin, had fought in India's independence struggle.

The Indian National Congress, he said referring to the opposition party's full name, should be called "Muslim League Congress".

Rajghat, Feb 23: The maternal uncle of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was recently arrested for allegedly making inflammatory statements during anti-CAA protests, was shot dead in front of his house at Bankatichak in Rajghat area, police said on Sunday.

Dr Nusratullah Warsi aka Dada (55), a property dealer, was shot dead on Saturday night at about 10:45 pm and an FIR against two people was filed in this connection on a written complaint of his family members.

According to police, it appears to be a case of murder due to monetary and property dispute and they are searching for both the accused.

Dr Kafeel Khan, suspended doctor of Gorakhpur BRD Medical College, was last month arrested under charges of giving a provocative speech during a protest against the CAA and NRC at Aligarh Muslim University and was later charged with the National Security Act.

Warsi on Saturday evening had gone to his lawyer Siraj Tariq's house, a few metres away from his own house, and was returning home on foot when a man shot him in his head, killing him on the spot.

"On the written complaint of family members, case of murder against one Imammuddin and Anil Sonkar has been registered and police has initiated probe and is searching for both the accused. Police met the women in their house and is interrogating them," Circle Officer VP Singh said.

Prima facie it appears to be a case of property and money dispute, he said, adding, three teams have been constituted to investigate the case and soon the accused will be caught.

Dr Kafeel Khan had last month raised apprehension in a Mumbai court about being killed in an "encounter" by the Uttar Pradesh police after claiming that he had been "falsely" implicated in the case by them.

The paediatrician had come to the limelight in 2017 when a controversy broke out after the death of over 60 children in less than a week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, where he was posted.
