CBI arrests Mumbai I-T commissioner, five others on bribery charges

Mumbai, May 3: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested six persons including the income tax commissioner of Mumbai on charges that he accepted bribes of over Rs 19 lakh to favour a major corporate group.

cbiCBI sources said that commissioner BB Rajendra Prasad and one other person has been arrested from Vishakhapatnam while four others have been taken into custody from Mumbai.

The sources said that the case pertains to over Rs 19 lakh allegedly taken as bribe by the commissioner.

They further said that Rs 1.5 crore have been seized by the agency during the searches. It is alleged that the bribe was taken to favour a corporate house.

Searches were conducted at the Essar Mumbai office and believed to be based on first in formation (FIR) registered in Vishakapatnam, moneycotrol.com reported. CBI has also gathered some documents from Essar company office, it said.

Prasad and the five others are likely to be produced in a Vishakapatnam court on Wednesday, reports said.

"We will be seeking their transit remand and will produce them before a court in Vishakhapatnam," a CBI official was quoted as saying.

Bhubaneswar, Jul 5: Odisha Police have arrested five persons including groom for gross negligence and violation of COVID-19 guidelines during his marriage procession in Berhampur.

"A case has been registered for violation of COVID-19 guidelines for organising a marriage procession with more than 50 guests in the premises of a hotel. They disregarded the compulsory use of mask and flouted social distancing norms," DIG Central Zone Satyabrata Bhoi said.

The incident happened on July 2.
"The case has been registered at Gopalpur PS under section 188/269/270 IPC, R/W Sec- 3 Epidemic Disease Act, and 34 IPC. Two vehicles used in the procession have also been seized. the arrested persons will be produced in the court," he added.

The District Collector has sealed the hotel for violating the COVID-19 norms.

Following the incident, the Chief Minister's office tweeted: "Odisha is in a crucial phase in the fight against COVID-19, hence, it is very essential that we all obey guidelines and regulations issued by State Government to contain the spread of COVID-19. Violation of the same would lead to strong action."

Pilibhit, Apr 3: Two men were mauled to death by a tiger in the vicinity of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve here, an official said on Friday.

The incident happened in Richhaula Chowki of Gajraula area in the district on Thursday night when Ninder Singh (50) and his servant Dorilal (28) were sleeping on their agricultural field, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve Deputy Director Naveen Khandelwal told reporters.

The tiger also dragged them for over 500 metres, he said.

The forest department came to know about the incident when they were informed about it by Ninder's brother after which teams of police, district administration and forest department reached there.

The tiger was tranquillised on Friday by the forest department team and will be sent to Lucknow Zoo.

Nagpur, Apr 5: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Imambada area in Nagpur on Saturday due to financial distress, police said.

Nikhil Gavhane, who worked in a grocery shop, hanged himself as he had taken money from a person and was stressed over repayment, an official said.

"He was depressed since a week," the Imambada police station official said.
