CBI drops murder charge in Nido Tania case

Nido_Tania_caseNew Delhi, May 3: Seven people chargesheeted in the Nido Tania racial killing case on Friday will face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, illegal confinement, and offences under the SC/ST Atrocities Act, but not murder. CBI, which took over the investigation two months ago, dropped the murder charge pressed by Delhi Police on the ground that the fatal assault on Tania was not premeditated but resulted from an altercation over the breaking of a glass counter.

The chargesheet filed in the court of the chief metropolitan magistrate mentions three juveniles (whose names cannot be published) and four adults, namely, Farman, Pawan, Sunder and Sunny Uppal. Proceedings against the juveniles will be conducted by the Juvenile Justice Board.

Nido Tania, 19, son of a Congress MLA from Arunachal Pradesh, Nido Pavitra, was a BA first-year student at a private university. He was beaten up in an altercation with some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar on January 29 this year, and was found dead at his residence the next day.

Delhi Police had slapped murder charges on the four adults accused in the case after Tania's postmortem revealed he died of head and facial injuries caused by a blunt object. The case was transferred to CBI after Tania's parents met Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to demand speedy justice.

"The investigations revealed that Tania visited Lajpat Nagar along with three friends and asked a few persons at a dairy (Rajasthan Paneer Bhandar) for directions to the house of a common friend. The accused humiliated and laughed at him," said CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad. "It was further alleged that Nido Tania, who was also physically assaulted ultimately succumbed to his injuries on January 30. His postmortem was conducted by a panel of doctors at AIIMS which concluded that cerebro pulmonary edema caused by a blunt weapon led to his death."

CBI's Special Crime Unit, which was conducting investigations, had carried out all the scientific tests on the accused persons and carried out forensic examination of the collected evidence.

New Delhi, Jun 19: India on Friday added 13,586 new COVID-19 cases for the first time in a single day, pushing the tally to 3,80,532, while the death toll rose to 12,573 with 336 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

In some positive news, the number of recoveries crossed the two lakh-mark and stands at 2,04,710, while there are 1,63,248 total COVID-19 active cases, according to the updated official figure at 8 am.

One patient had migrated.

"Thus, around 53.79 percent patients have recovered so far," an official said.

The total number of confirmed cases include foreigners. 

India registered over 10,000 cases for the eighth day in a row.

Of the 336 new deaths reported till Friday morning, 100 were in Maharashtra, 65 in Delhi, 49 in Tamil Nadu, 31 in Gujarat, 30 in Uttar Pradesh, 12 each in Karnataka and West Bengal, 10 in Rajasthan, six in Jammu and Kashmir, five in Punjab, four each in Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, three in Telangana, two in Andhra Pradesh and one each in Assam, Jharkhand and Kerala.

New Delhi, May 26: As India ranked 10th in the global infection list, overtaking Iran, which was an early hotspot of coronavirus, India's top medical body has said the human trials of COVID-19 vaccine may begin at least in six months.

Dr. Rajni Kant, Director Regional Medical Research Centre and Head at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said, "The virus strain isolated at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) laboratory in Pune will be used to develop the vaccine, and this strain has been successfully transferred to the Bharat Biotech International Ltd. (BBIL). It is expected that the human trials of the vaccine will begin in at least six months."

Queried on the focus areas as India inches closer to 1.4 lakh COVID-19 cases, Kant said we should not get anxious about the rapid increase in numbers, especially in the past week, which saw 5,000 Covid-19 cases daily, instead focus on protecting the most vulnerable group.

"We should not fear from increasing Covid-19 cases. The elderly and people with comorbidities need protection. This is the highly vulnerable group, and we need to deploy resources and develop strategies to keep the mortality rate as low as possible in this group," said Kant.

Initially, it was assumed that the country would require thousands of ventilators, but last week, the health ministry said only 0.45 per cent of COVID-19 cases need ventilator support.

Kant insisted the focus should be on five per cent to 10 per cent serious patients. "We are testing more than one lakh daily and our case fatality rate is already one of the lowest in the world. In absence of vaccine, people should follow social distancing guidelines," he added

On the significance of the recovery rate, Kant said the increasing recovery rate of the COVID-19 patients, which is at 41 per cent, is a bright spot in India's fight against deadly viral infection.

Queried on large scale COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad, Kant said the population density in these regions is very high, which proves to be the just right environment for the viral infection.

He insisted on developing robust cluster management strategies in the hard-hit coronavirus spots, and the movement of people should be curtailed in these areas.

"Currently, a lot of people are moving around easily and avoiding social distancing norms. The first phase of the lockdown was very effective, but now things have changed," added Kant.

New Delhi, Jun 17: AAP MLA and national spokesperson Atishi has tested positive for COVID-19, her party colleagues said on Wednesday.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to wish her speedy recovery.

"Atishi ji has played an important role in the fight against corona. I hope that she will get healthy soon and again get involved in serving the people," Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.

According to sources, Atishi was tested on Tuesday for COVID-19 and her report came positive today.

She is presently under home quarantine, the sources said.

"Get well soon Atishi, recover soon from Corona," AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj tweeted.

Atishi represents Kalkaji assembly constituency.
