Censor Board stifles my freedom: Kamal Haasan

April 17, 2015

New Delhi, Apr 17: Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan says he has an ongoing struggle against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to achieve creative freedom.

The 60-year-old actor, whose 2013 film ‘Vishwaroopam’ was initially banned in Tamil Nadu for 15 days and saw a release only after muting certain scenes, has always voiced his reservations about the censor board guidelines.

Kamal HaasanHaasan, however, clarified that he holds nothing against the people in the board and called CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani a "friend".

"It (Censor Board) does stifle my creative freedom. It is stifling my freedom. I have spoken of this to some of the board members, the officers. They are not out to destroy the film industry. They have a job, they are given a stipulation as a set of rules with which they operate. They all love cinema.

"My struggle against CBFC is not against people. When I talk about CBFC curbing my freedom of expression, it is not against its chief Pahlaj Nihalani or other officers. They all are my friends. But this is an ongoing struggle to achieve freedom and we will get it," Haasan told a daily.

Nihalani and the board received flak from the Hindi film industry for issuing a list of 28 "objectionable words", to be banned from movies. The list, however, has been put on hold.

The board delayed Anushka Sharma's "NH 10" by objecting to certain scenes and did not give the primary clearance to the release of Hollywood erotic-romance ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’.

The latest controversy surrounding Haasan, meanwhile, is the ban sought by the Tamil Nadu wing of VHP on his upcoming film ‘Uttama Villain’.

The group claimed the film will affect religious sentiments of Hindus.

Reacting to it, Haasan said his rationalistic ways are perhaps reasons why he is targeted and called for tolerance from people.

"Probably it is me being a rationalist, that's my way of life like they have their way. Would they say that to a Tirthankar or a Jain, who believes in a way of life? Likewise they will have to accept me as one of their brothers. I don't live that life but I love them. Some of them are my relatives.

"My parents could be vaguely termed as Hindus. They are Vaishvanites. How can I hate people? It is silly of them to even think I would want to lose my audience. I want all to come and watch my film," he said.

Haasan specified the film is not "about Hindus or rationalists but revolves around people."

Mumbai, Jul 12: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sealed actor Rekha’s bungalow in suburban Bandra after a security guard there tested positive for coronavirus, a civic official said on Sunday.

The guard at the 65-year-old actor’s bungalow ‘Sea Springs’ tested positive on Tuesday, the official said.

The BMC has put a board outside the premises declaring the are as a containment zone. The security guard has been hospitalised at the BMC’s COVID-19 care facility in Bandra Kurla Complex, he said.

As the bungalow is a standalone one, only a portion of it has been sealed, he said.

Mumbai, Mar 7: A 'farm-to-fork' themed restaurant 'He-Man' situated on National Highway in Haryana's Karnal -- franchised by veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra -- has been sealed for building law violations, officials said on Saturday.

The Karnal Municipal Corporation sealed the franchise outlet on Friday for not furnishing the change of land use (CLU) certificate and illegal constructions, an official said.

The restaurant is located on National Highway 44 on the outskirts of Karnal, some 150 km from here.

The franchise was given to Delhi-based businessman Pramod Kumar.

"After the success of my restaurant Garam Dharam Dhaba, I am now announcing a farm-to- fork themed restaurant 'He-Man'," Dharmendra had announced on Instagram after its launch on Valentine's Day.

Karnal Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav said the action was initiated as the restaurant owner did not respond to MC notice on the issue.

Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix finally ended his dry run at the Oscars as he picked up the best actor trophy for his performance in and as "Joker" at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The 45-year-old actor had earlier bagged a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his turn as a failed, unhinged stand-up comedian who descends into chaos.

In a lengthy and rambling speech, Phoenix touched upon racism, climate change and gender inequality. He also remembered his brother River Phoenix, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 23 in 1993.

"When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric. He said, 'run to the rescue with love and peace will follow'," Phoenix said. At the Academy Awards and the entire Hollywood award season, Phoenix had emerged as an undisputed frontrunner even though he was up against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"), Adam Driver ("Marriage Story"), "Antonio Banderas ("Pain & Glory") and Jonathan Pryce ("The Two Popes").

An Oscar had eluded Phoenix for the most part of his career, despite his successful collaborations with Ridley Scott ("Gladiator"), James Mangold ("Walk The Line") and Paul Thomas Anderson ("The Master"), all of which had earned him nominations.

But as Arthur Fleck aka The Joker, Phoenix finally managed to break that jinx and became the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the DC comic book villain after the posthumous best supporting actor win to Heath Ledger in 2008.

As Joker, Phoenix took a deep dive into character, capturing its essence as well as maniacal spirit in both body and soul.

He lost 52 pounds to get into the physicality of Fleck and turned to a pathological disorder to get his distinct laughter right.

Phillips wrote the part keeping Phoenix in mind though the actor took some convincing to play the role.

Phoenix started the film's festival circuit tour on a positive note at Cannes last year that followed by stops at Venice and Toronto.

The film had also courted controversies, owing to its theme of gun violence in the movie as well as Phoenix's temperamental press tour that saw him walking out of an interview midway.

But critics and the fans loved the actor's riveting turn in the movie and his pointed speeches.

At the Golden Globes, he called out the industry for its insensitivity towards climate change and pulled up his peers for using private jets for travel, while at the SAGs, he joked how he would always lose a role to DiCaprio and asked Christian Bale to deliver a bad performance for once in his career.

In his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs, Phoenix acknowledged the lack of diversity in the nominations, calling himself a part of the problem. Phoenix's career most praised performances include "Signs ", "We Own the Night", "Two Lovers", "The Immigrant", "Her", "You Were Never Really Here" and "Inherent Vice".
