Bengaluru, Aug 8: Communist Party of India (M) today urged the Union government to immediately release Rs 1000 crore to Karnataka for taking up relief works in flood affected 15 Districts on war footing.
In a release here on Thursday, CPLI (M) State Committee Secretary U Basavaraju said that flood situation has turned into grim due to release of heavy discharge from Maharashtra Reservoirs to river Krishna, rains under the influence of South West Monsoon lashing Malnad belt, Coastal and Kodagu Districts. About 36 taluks are affected and more than 240 villages were marooned with flood water.
He said that standing crops in more than 2.4 lakhs hectares of land were lost and the number of people and livestocks stranded is ever increasing and relief measures has to be taken on war footing. Already 11 deaths were reported due to floods in Karnataka. There is urgent need for opening more Rehabilitation Centres and Cow sheds.
