Centre will inquire into snooping issue: Shinde

New Delhi, Dec 2: The Union government has said it will inquire into the alleged misuse of state machinery in Gujarat in the wake of snooping on a woman, allegedly at the behest of Amit Shah, former Minister and close aide of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Asked whether Mr. Modi should face prosecution for the alleged misuse of state machinery, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Sunday: “An inquiry will be conducted and [a] decision will be taken. The Union and State Home Secretaries have been authorised to take action against [illegal] snooping.”

Sources said a State Home Secretary was empowered to order tapping of the phone of a person within the State, but when surveillance was done in multiple States, permission of the Union Home Secretary was mandatory. The Gujarat Police seemed to have tapped the phone of the woman when she was in Maharashtra and Karnataka, besides Gujarat, without taking authorisation from the Union Home Secretary, the sources said.

The Gujarat government has constituted an inquiry committee, headed by a retired judge of the Gujarat High Court

New Delhi, Jun 1: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday asked airlines to allot seats in flights in such a manner that middle seats are kept vacant to the extent possible.

However, if a flyer has been allotted the middle seat due to a high passenger load "then additional protective equipment like the wrap-around gown of the Ministry of Textile approved standards" must be provided to that passenger in addition to three-layered face mask and face shield, said the DGCA order, which has been accessed by news agency.

India resumed its domestic passenger flights from May 25 after a gap of two months due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown. International commercial passenger flights continue to remain suspended in the country.

New Delhi, Mar 28: The total number of coronavirus positive cases in the country has risen to 918 that include foreign nationals, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.

The ministry said: "The total positive cases of coronavirus are 918. The active COVID-19 cases are 819. Cured and discharged are 79. While 19 deaths have occurred so far. One person with COVID-19 migrated. As many as 15,24,266 passengers were screened at airports."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.

New Delhi, Apr 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India's efforts to combat coronavirus have set an example and it is among countries which understood the pandemic's seriousness and took various timely decisions to combat the virus.

Addressing BJP workers to mark the 40th foundation day of the party, he also appreciated the maturity shown by people during the lockdown, describing it as  unprecedented.

"We got to see our collective strength on Sunday evening," he said referring to the countrywide exercise to switch off lights and illuminate diyas for nine minutes to show India's collective strength to fight the deadly virus.

He also urged BJP workers to follow a five-point agenda, including working to ensure that no poor goes hungry.

He asked them to follow the guidelines issued by party president J P Nadda.

Fight against coronavirus is no less than war, Modi said, asking BJP workers to donate and encourage others to contribute to the PM-CARES fund.
