Chinese prez to take part in Brics Summit in Goa

Beijing, Oct 10: Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit India, Cambodia and Bangladesh this week during which he would take part in the Brics Summit in Goa.

Xi-JinpingDuring his 13-17 October visit, Xi will first go to Cambodia followed by Bangladesh and later travel to Goa to attend the Brics Summit, Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

In Goa, Xi will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of other leaders, including heads of the Bimstec (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand) countries who have been invited to the Goa Summit.

In all, 11 Heads of State from Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) countries will attend the meeting.

The Brics Summit will start on 15 October and will end the next day, following which there will be a retreat, in which Bimstec countries will take part, according to officials.

Xi's visit to Bangladesh is regarded as significant as it is taking place after 30 years. The last visit at that level took place in 1986,

The two countries are expected to sign important agreements, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong, who briefed the media here on Xi's visit, said.

While Xi is skipping a visit to Nepal which was put off after the election of Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda, he would meet him on the sidelines of the Brics Summit, officials said.

Reports earlier said his visit to Nepal was put off as China was upset over the delay in implementation of agreements by the new government to link both countries.

Li said China regards Goa Summit of the Brics countries important because it will provide an opportunity for the leaders of the five-member bloc to meet and interact with the leaders of Bimstec.

Hubei, Mar 25: As a bus departed from its terminus at Hankou Railway Station at 5:25 am Wednesday morning, Wuhan started to resume bus service after nine weeks of lockdown.

Apart from a driver, a safety supervisor was also on each bus, whose duty was to make sure all passengers are healthy.
"For those who do not use smartphones, they should bring with them a health certificate issued by the health authorities," said Zhou Jingjing, a safety supervisor aboard bus No. 511 departing from the Wuchang Railway Station complex.
The once hardest-hit city in central China's Hubei Province during the COVID-19 outbreak took unprecedented traffic restrictions on Jan 23. All of its public transport and all outbound flights and trains had been suspended in an attempt to contain the virus within the region.

Paris, Apr 24: The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus pandemic crossed 190,000 on Friday, with nearly two-thirds of the fatalities in Europe, according to an AFP tally compiled from official sources at 0740 GMT.

A total of 190,089 people have died and 2,698,733 been infected since the virus emerged in China in December. The hardest hit continent is Europe, with 116,221 deaths and 1,296,248 cases.

The country with the most deaths is the United States with 49,963, followed by Italy with 25,549, Spain with 22,157, France with 21,856 and Britain 18,738.

British lawmaker Debbie Abrahams' e-Business visa was revoked as she was involved in anti-India activities and the cancellation was conveyed to her on February 14, government sources said on Tuesday.

Asserting that the grant, rejection or revocation of a visa or electronic travel authorisation is the sovereign right of a country, the sources said Abrahams was issued an e-Business visa on October 7 last year which was valid till October 5, 2020 for attending business meetings.

"Her e-Business visa was revoked on February 14, 2020 on account of her indulging in activities which went against India's national interest. The rejection of the e-Business visa was intimated to her on February 14," a source said.

Abrahams, who chairs a British parliamentary group on Kashmir, was denied entry into India upon her arrival at the New Delhi airport on Monday.

Government officials had said on Monday also that she was informed in advance that her e-visa had been cancelled.
