Clear 'Lipstick Under My Burkha' with 'A' certificate: FCAT to CBFC

April 26, 2017

New Delhi, Apr 26: The Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) has directed the Central Board Film Certification (CBFC) to grant an ‘A’ certificate to the Hindi film ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ with voluntary cuts and certain modifications.

LipstickDisposing off an appeal filed by the film’s director Alankrita Srivastava and producer Prakash Jha, the Tribunal noted that there was “no violation” of guideline. Neither the visuals nor the dialogues in the film were “contemptuous of racial, religious or other groups.”

“There was no targeting of women of certain community or religion,” it added.

The Tribunal noted that the examining committee and revising committee of the CBFC "misdirected themselves” in denying certification on the ground that the story of the film was women oriented.

“There cannot be any embargo on a film being women oriented or containing sexual fantasies and expression of the inner desires of women," Tribunal headed by Justice Manmohan Sarin said in its order, finding “merit in the submissions” made by the appellant against the CBFC's examining and review committees’ orders.

The film, starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Ratna Pathak Shah, chronicles the secret lives of four women of different ages in a small town in India as they search for freedom “for their desires, dreams and aspirations, through small acts of courage and stealthy rebellion against the male dominated patriarchy.”

“The entire matter has to be considered in the perspective of the theme of the film, the story, the characters and the overall impact of the film. As a matter of general approach if the aspect of sexual desires and their expression is sensitively handled without bringing coarseness, vulgarity or obscenity, pandering prurient tendencies, then it is not to be disallowed,” the Tribunal noted.

During hearing of the matter, the appellant offered “voluntary” cuts or reduction in the length of the sex scenes or others which may have been considered unduly long or unnecessary.

“It is undoubtedly true that in this film, the script contains certain abusive and cuss words. It also has depiction of sexual acts. However, the same are integral and germane to the characters and the story,” the FCAT noted.

It, however, suggested for reducing the sex scenes “without affecting in any manner the projection and substance of the scene or the basic film.”

“It essentially would mean not showing a prolonged sex act which is even otherwise not in conformity with the guidelines requiring such scenes to be kept the minimum,” it said.

Tribunal asked the appellant for muting a word used at one place in the film as it felt that the use of the said word was “inappropriate in the situation.”

Mumbai, Jul 28: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Manoj Tiwari has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to look into the case of actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death and direct the state police to register an FIR in this connection.

Wishing Thackeray on Monday on his birthday, Tiwari, who has acted in Bhojpuri films, pointed out that over 40 days have passed since the death of Rajput, but an FIR is yet to be registered.

"Many happy returns of the Day @CMOMaharashtra Shri Uddhav Ji, on this day I request with folded hands to give justice to Sushant who died 43 days ago, but no FIR has been registered so far. I hope you will help. Please do justice to millions of SSR fans," he tweeted.

Bollywood actor Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, which the police said was a case of suicide. His death had triggered an outcry from several quarters alleging that the late actor, who hailed from Bihar, was a victim of nepotism in the film industry.

The lawmaker from Northeast Delhi's Lok Sabha seat, who visited the deceased actor's family in Patna last month had then said: "Sushant's father and sister requested me to take up the issue and get him justice. It was really a sentimental moment for me".

Previously, Tiwari had demanded a CBI investigation into the matter

According to the police, statements of 40 people including film critic Rajeev Masand, director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and filmmaker Aditya Chopra and actor Rhea Chakraborty have been recorded in the investigation so far.

California, Jun 30: Online video-sharing platform YouTube on Monday banned several prominent channels, including those belonging to Stefan Molyneux and Richard Spencer.

The company banned six channels for repeatedly violating YouTube's policies.

According to The Verge, other channels banned include American Renaissance (with its associated channel AmRen Podcasts) and the channel for Spencer's National Policy Institute.

YouTube began taking stern measures on supremacist channels in June 2019.

"We have strict policies prohibiting hate speech on YouTube, and terminate any channel that repeatedly or egregiously violates those policies," the Verge quoted a YouTube spokesperson as saying.

"After updating our guidelines to better address supremacist content, we saw a 5x spike in video removals and have terminated over 25,000 channels for violating our hate speech policies," the spokesperson added.
