Bengaluru, May 30: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah has reportedly slammed MLA BA Mohiuddin Bava during Congress Legislative Party meeting for failing to convince his brother BM Farooq to refrain from contesting Rajya Sabha polls on Janata Dal (Secular) ticket.

JD(S) has fielded Mr Farooq, the proprietor of Fiza group and president of Bearys Welfare Association for Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka for the sole seat it can win with the help of a few independents.

According to political analysts, HD Deve Gowda-led regional party has targeted two birds with one stone. By picking a Muslim candidate, JD(S) has not only succeed in checkmating rebel MLA Zameer Ahamed Khan, but also sent a strong message to Mr Siddaramaiah, who has been projecting himself as messiah of the poor and the downtrodden.

“How can your brother jump into the poll fray without your consent,” an angry CM was quoted by a Kannada news channel as asking Mr Bava, who represents Mangaluru North constituency in Legislative Assembly.

Mr Bava replied that he had no control over Mr Farooq and that the latter had taken the decision independently after directly contacting JD(S) leaders without his family's consent. The CM, however, refused to buy Mr Bava's version and reminded him that he had fetched Mr Farooq to the former's office in connection with wind energy projects some time ago.

“If you wanted a Rajya Sabha ticket for your family, you should have asked me instead of allowing your brother to approach JD(S). You are well aware of the fact that senior Congress leader Oscar Farnades, who also belongs to your region (coastal Karnataka) is contesting on Congress ticket,” Mr Siddaramaiah said suspecting Mr Bava's loyalty to the party.

Mr Bava said that he had tried his best to convince his brother not to contest on JD(S) ticket but in vain. “I am a pure Congress man and I will cast my vote in front of the party observers. My vote will be against my brother, who is not with my party,” Mr Bava said.

Belagavi, Jan 17: Maharashtra Minister of State for Public Health, Medical Education, FDA and Textiles Rajendra Patil-Yadravkar who had come here to participate in the martyrs day programme of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) was detained by the police and escorted back till the state borders on Friday.

MES had organised its annual martyrs day programme at Hutatma Circle here. Its leaders had earlier been asked by the District Administration and City Police to ensure that none of the political leaders from Maharashtra participate and create law and order problems by their anti-state statements.

Patil had managed to sneak into the city through a route which was not manned by the police. He came in an auto-rickshaw to the programme venue.

Police personnel present for security took him into their custody and later escorted him till the state’s borders with Maharashtra at Kognoli on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway.

MES leaders alleged that the police personnel violated protocol while taking the incumbent minister into their custody and they also roughed him up.

All vehicles entering the city from different routes and particularly from Maharashtra were screened to confirm that political leaders from the neighbouring state do not participate in the martyrs day programme and create problems by their statements that also affect law and order along with linguistic harmony.

It was not known if Patil had landed in the city on Thursday and managed to reach the programme venue without getting noticed by using an auto-rickshaw.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: Renowned ophthalmologist and Narayana Nethralaya Chairman Dr K Bhujang Shetty today advised those wearing contact lenses to switch to eyeglasses as a preventive measure.

“Though the facial mask is mandatory as a preventive measure against the dreaded Coronavirus, not many know that the virus can also enter the body through eyes. Wearing glasses or spectacles reduces the spread of the virus,” Dr Bhujang Shetty said.

Although it is more likely that people may catch Coronavirus infections through mouth and nose, there are chances of the virus also entering through eyes. “In a day, humans tend to touch their face and eyes almost 20 times an hour knowingly or unknowingly. Users of contact lenses end up touching their eyes and face frequently, increasing the risk of infections. Therefore, it is advisable that they switch to eyeglasses until the situation improves”, according to a release here on Friday.
