Karnataka, May 23: After swearing in as Karnataka's 24th chief minister, H.D. Kumaraswamy assured that their coalition government -- Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) -- will run better than any one-party government.

Addressing a press conference here as chief minister, Kumaraswamy said, "This coalition government (Congress-JD(S)) will run better than anyone party government and we will concentrate on working for the public."

Kumaraswamy was administered the oath by Governor Vajubhai Vala in a gala ceremony held outside the Vidhan Soudha, the state assembly. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G. Parameshwara also took the oath as the state's deputy chief minister.

The ceremony, which was attended by a battery of political dignitaries, including United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, was nothing short of show of unity of the opposition parties, one year ahead of general elections.

Talking about the same, Kumaraswamy said the leaders who came from all over the country wanted to give a message to the nation that "we are one, and, in 2019, there will be a major change in political situation".

"They were not here to protect this government. This government will be protected by local Congress leaders and our leaders," he added.

This is Kumaraswamy's second term as the chief minister of Karnataka since 2007, when he last held the post for 20 months.

Attired in the traditional "dhoti" and white shirt, Kumaraswamy took the oath in the name of God and the people of "Kannada Nadu".

Floor test on May 25

The new Chief Minister told media persons that would take a floor test on May 25th. "I have become a child of circumstances. Many have expressed doubts about the stability of this government. But I will reply to them with my behaviour in future. I will take a floor test on May 25," he said.

"The BJP has accused me of immorality. But if we introspect, I don't know who can claim to be moral and whose moves will be immoral," he said.

"I have myself played a role in bringing down a Congress-JD(S) government in 2006. But that is an old story. This will be a stable government. I assure the people that this will be one of the most stable governments in the State and will work towards solving people's problems," he said.

Mangaluru, May 4: No major crowds were seen in the coastal city of Mangaluru today except in front of the liquor shops after the district administration relaxed the lockdown norms for 12 hours a day (between 7am and 7pm).

There was no mad rush of vehicles either on city roads when the relaxed lockdown began. There were fewer people to buy essentials in front of grocery and vegetable shops as they had time till late evening.

There was no let down in the number of police pickets as well as curbs on vehicular movement across the city either.

The government has allowed sale of liquor in CL2 (standalone wine shops) and CL 11 (MSIL outlets) to mop up revenues when Lockdown-3 commenced from Monday. Compared the other parts of Karnataka, the size of queues in front of liquor shops in Mangaluru were smaller.

Like other parts of the country, the lockdown was imposed in the coastal district on March 24 to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Prior to that, a curfew was imposed in the district from March 22 midnight. The lockdown did not apply to essential services such as sale of food, groceries, milk, vegetables, fruits, and meat and fish. Gradually the district administration had to intensify the lockdown and allow those shops to remain open only between 7 a.m. and 12 noon.

With the lockdown relaxation extending till 7 p.m., Mangaluru today witnessed people and private vehicles moving freely in the afternoon for the first time in more than a month. However, only those who had to go for work and do other essential activities were seen on roads. After 7 p.m. movements of all kinds of vehicles will be prohibited.

The relaxation was to facilitate economic activities that had come to a standstill during the first two phases of lockdown. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha, meanwhile, warned the people against misusing lockdown relaxation and venturing out without any genuine reason.

Kolkatta, Mar 19: A local leader of BJP has been arrested for organising a cow urine consumption event in Kolkata, claiming that it will protect people from coronavirus or cure those already infected, leading to a civic volunteer falling ill after drinking it.

The police said that 40-year-old Narayan Chatterjee, who had on Monday organised a cow worship programme at a cowshed and distributed cow urine, was arrested following a complaint filed by the victim.

He had vouched for its "miraculous" properties while offering gaumutra to others.

A civic volunteer, who was on duty near the cow shed also consumed gaumutra and fell sick on Tuesday, following which he lodged a complaint with the police against Chatterjee.

Reacting to the arrest, the state BJP leadership criticised the state government.

"Chatterjee had distributed cow urine, but he didn't fool people in consuming it. When he distributed it he clearly said it was cow urine, he didn't force anyone to drink it. It has not been proved whether it is harmful or not.

"So how can just police arrest him without any reason. This is completely undemocratic," state BJP General Secretary Sayantan Basu said.

West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh has said there is no harm in drinking cow urine and he has no qualms in admitting he consumes it.

His party colleague and MP Locket Chatterjee, however, differed, terming it an "unscientific belief" that should be shunned.

The cow urine distribution as a cure for coronavirus had drawn sharp criticism from the doctors.
