Colourful procession marks end of Mangaluru Dasara

Mangaluru, Sept 30: The procession of idols and tableaux and dances by various folk artistes marked the culmination of Dasara festivities at the Kudroli Gokarnanatheswara Temple here on Saturday.

The procession, which started around 6.30 pm from the temple, passed through Mannagudda, PVS, Navabharat Circle, K S Rao Road, Hampankatta, University College, Ganapathi High School Road, Car Street, Lower Car Street, New Chitra and Alake before culminating on Sunday morning, with the immersion of the idol of Goddess Sharada, the presiding deity of Navaratri, at the pond within the shrine’s precincts.

The Dasara procession started after a special prayer held under the guidance of veteran Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary. The procession had 70 tableaux, more than 30 tiger dance teams, Chende, Kombu, and other folk art teams. Colourful umbrellas, Dollu Kunitha team, Gombe Kunitha, Bhajan teams and other artistes added colour to the celebration.

The tableau carrying the idol of Lord Ganesha led the procession, followed by the tableaux carrying the portrait of Brahmasri Narayana Guru, idols of Adishakthi, Nava Durge - Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kooshmadhini, Skandamatha, Kathyayini, Mahakali, Gowri and Siddidhatri -- and that of Goddess Sharada, the much awaited among all.

The streets were decked up with light and colour. The idol of Goddess Sharada was the first to emerge out of the temple. As the deity was taken out, devotees performed Arathi, offered fruits, vegetables, and coconuts to the idol.

The Mannagudda Road leading to the temple from Lady Hill Circle was bustling with people ahead of the procession. While some had already occupied vantage points on the pavements and on buildings, bus stops and also the footpaths, some preferred to be on move to get close to the procession.

The devotees offered their obeisance when the tableaux carrying the idols stopped. Some also performed Puja, received vermilion in return and applied it on their foreheads.

Mangaladevi Rathotsava

Hundreds of devotees lined up on the streets to take part in the annual Rathotsava of the Mangaladevi temple on Saturday. Later, Balipuja was conducted. The idol was taken out in a chariot through Jeppu Main Road.

Udupi, May 25: In an early morning robbery, two miscreants snatched around 1.2 kilo grams of gold jewelleries from a jeweller and ran away in Udupi.

The incident took place at around 5:30 am near Beedinagudde junction when jeweller Vijay was carrying the gold for lapidary work from his house at Bannanje to his store at Sri Laxmi Towar in Beedinagudde. 

They bumped into him when he going to the second floor of the Sri Laxmi Towar.

According to him, the miscreants who were wearing helmets threatened him with a knife then robbed jewelleries worth around Rs 50 lakh.

While decamping, the robbers also snatched his mobile phone and threw down from building.

Udupi town police conducted the spot investigation and registered a case. Further investigations are on.

Kasaragod, Jul 19: An accused in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Prevention) Act (POCSO) killed self minutes before being shifted to the jail on Sunday.

Police sources said the criminal, Shaiju, was admitted to Covid-19 observation ward after he was arrested and remanded to judicial custody after he was charged with a case under POCSO for unnatural sex with a neighbour boy recently.

The accused had made a similar attempt last month but was implicated in a case after his treatment.

Mangaluru, Jun 1: A youth was hacked to death and two others suffered critical injuries following a fight between two gangs at Yekkaru Devaragudde near Kateel under the limits of Bajpe police station last night.

The deceased has been identified as Keertan (20), a resident of Marakada. The injured are Nitin (20) and Manesh (20). It is learnt that old animosity led to the attack and murder.

According to sources, members of both gangs were friends in the past. They had become enemies of each other following a fight regarding sand mining.

Sources said that Keertan, Nitin, and Manesh had reportedly invited their rival gang to Devaragudde for some discussion. A verbal friction arose between the two gangs and it culminated in the attack by the rival gang members with daggers. Keertan reportedly died on the sport. The other two were taken to hospital.

The accused fled the scene soon after committing the crime. A case has been registered at Bajpe police station. A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused.
