Thiruvananthapuram, May 19: Scripting a new chapter for the BJP in Kerala, party veteran and former union minister O Rajagopal today won from Nemom constituency here to help the party make its debut in the state assembly.

rajagopalanNemom was one of the segments where the BJP had pinned its hope the most in the present election to open its account in the Assembly.

86-year-old Rajagopal, who had lost by a narrow margin in previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, wrested Nemom from sitting MLA and vibrant CPI(M)-LDF leader V Sivankutty defeating him by 8,671 votes

When many of his party colleagues were trailing, Rajagopal, former Union Minister in the A B Vajpayee government, maintained a clear lead since the beginning itself.

The historic victory is a sweet revenge for Rajagopal, as he had lost in the constituency in a photo finish to Sivankutty in the 2011 assembly polls.

Garnering 43,661 votes, he had come second to Sivankutty last time. He had also garnered 50,076 votes in Nemom against Congress's Shashi Tharoor who got 32,639 in the last Lok Sabha elections.

In the last civic polls, of the total 22 wards in Nemom, BJP and LDF got nine seats each and UDF four.

Born on September 15, 1929 to Madhavan Nair and O Kunhikkavu Amma at Pudukkod Panchayath in Palakkad district, he completed Law graduation in Chennai and began practicing law in 1956 at the Palakkad District Court.

In 1980, the Janata Party split and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was formed and he served as its Kerala president until 1985. He became All India Secretary, General Secretary, and the Vice President of BJP and was elected in 1992 and 1998 to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh.

In the year 1999, he became the Minister of State in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs and Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and then became the Minister of State in the Ministry of Railways between 2000 and 2002.

He later held the positions of Minister of State in the Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence and Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.

Having fought several assembly and parliamentary elections from various constituencies in Kerala, Rajagopal had finally managed to win a seat.

Bengaluru, Feb 18: A 26-year-old Kannada singer committed suicide over alleged dowry harassment on Monday. Sushmitha, a playback singer who got married to Sharath Kumar about one-and-a-half years ago, hung herself from the ceiling at her parent's home in Nagarabhavi, Bengaluru on Monday.

The singer sent a Whatsapp to her brother and mother before hanging herself early morning on Monday. She accused her husband and his relatives of dowry harassment in her death note.

According to Bengaluru Police, the singer has accused her husband, his sister and his aunt of harassing her for dowry in her death note. On Monday morning, Sushmitha's brother alerted the police after he found her dead body hanging from the ceiling. She used her dupatta to hang herself.

Sushmitha had lent her voice for Kannada songs in films like Haalu Thuppa and Srisamanya.

Police informed that Sushmitha sent a Whatsapp message to her brother, Sachin, at around 1 am on Sunday and explained that her husband Sharath and her relatives have been harassing her since the time she got married. Sachin read the message at around 5:30am and rushed to her room where he found her hanging from the ceiling.

In the text message, Sushmitha wrote that her husband, Sharath, his sister, Geetha, and his aunt, Vydehi, harassed her and they were the reason behind her ending her life. She also stated that she did not want to end her life in their house and hence came to her parents’ house.

The Annapoorneshwari Nagar police have registered a case of dowry death, charging her husband and his sister and aunt based on complaint filed by Sushmitha’s mother Meenakshi. The three accused are on run after hearing about her death and police said that efforts are on to trace them.

Sushmitha's husband Sharath Kumar is a manager in a car showroom and a resident of KS Nagar in Bengaluru.

New Delhi, Feb 24: India has deeply appreciated the Senegal government's decision to extradite fugitive gangster Ravi Poojary to India, official sources said on Sunday.

Facilitation of transit provided by the Government of France has also been acknowledged, they said.

Ravi Prakash Poojary, accused of committing a number of serious offences including murder and extortion in multiple jurisdictions, was extradited from Senegal on Saturday.

The probe agencies have persistently pursued the case for his extradition with the authorities in Senegal. India had made a request with Senegal for his extradition in early 2019, sources said.

Poojary was associated with gangster Chhota Rajan, but he also worked for fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
