Mangaluru, Aug 21: Even though Karnataka government has set aside Rs 3,399.36 lakh for acquisition of 396.67 acres of land for the expansion of Mangaluru International Airport, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has reportedly postponed its plan of runway expansion.

In a fresh development, AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra has written to Karnataka Chief Secretary Subhash Chandra Khuntia saying the expansion project is not feasible.

However, the state government has decided to go ahead with the plan of acquisition of 34 acres of land to set up RESA (Runway End Safety Area) will be done as per the directions of DGCA (Director General of Civil Aviation).

After 2010 air crash, the AAI had proposed to expand the new runway from 2,450 m to 2,740 m. The existing runway meets the requirements of Airbus 320/321 and Boeing-737 aircraft. However, expansion is must to felicitate the landing of wide-bodied aircraft like Boeing-777 and Boeing-747.

The expansion will also increase the number of destinations/connectivity worldwide. Currently, Mangaluru is directly connected to Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai with multiple daily flights in this domestic sector and Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Dammam, Sharjah, Doha, Bahrain and Muscat in the international sector.

If sources are to be believed, high cost and other challenges including table-top runway forced the AAI to postpone the expansion plan. On the other hand AAI may take other steps to maximise operations at the Airport in the present scenario, limiting the operations to Airbus 320/321 and Boeing-737 with load penalty.

New Delhi, Mar 3: Delhi's Tihar Prison authorities had made all necessary preparations for the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape-and-murder case which was scheduled for Tuesday, officials said Monday.

However, on Monday evening, a city court deferred the hanging till further orders.

Postponing the execution, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana said the hanging cannot be carried out pending disposal of Pawan Gupta's mercy plea before the President, observing any condemned convict must not meet his "Creator" with grievance against courts for not acting fairly on the opportunity to exhaust legal remedies.

"We had made all the necessary arrangements for the execution of the four convicts which was scheduled for Tuesday at 6 AM. Now, the execution has been postponed and we are waiting for the further order by the court," a senior jail official said.

The hanging of the four men -- Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan -- who are lodged in Tihar jail, was fixed for March 3 in Tihar jail on a court order.

"We had checked the ropes. Hangman was called and dummy executions were carried out," another senior jail official said.

Barring Pawan, the other three had in the previous weeks moved curative petitions and mercy pleas which were all dismissed.

The first date of execution -- January 22 -- fixed on January 7 was postponed by the court to February 1. But on January 31, the court indefinitely postponed the hanging. On February 17, the court again issued fresh date for execution of death warrants for March 3 at 6 AM.

The court in its orders observed that the four convicts cannot be hanged since a mercy plea of one or the other convict was pending.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Arvind Kejriwal wrote to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Wednesday, staking claim to form the government in the national capital, sources said, while hinting that the AAP might not invite senior leaders and chief ministers of other parties for the oath-taking ceremony.

The sources said it was the formal process by the AAP chief, who was elected as the legislature party leader earlier in the day, to stake claim for forming the new government.

Kejriwal, who returned to power in Delhi with a stunning poll victory on Tuesday, will take oath as chief minister for the third consecutive time on February 16.

While the oath-taking ceremony will be open to the public, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was considering not inviting leaders and chief ministers of other parties as it did not wish to be seen as a "confrontationist" against the BJP-led Centre, the sources said.

They, however, added that the party was yet to take a decision on it.

The AAP has planned mobilisation of people for the mega event and all the newly-elected MLAs of the party have been asked to ensure huge participation from their constituencies.

"I request the people of Delhi to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the chief minister at the Ramlila Maidan in large numbers," senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia told reporters, adding that the ceremony will start at 10 am.

The AAP won 62 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged the remaining eight seats. The Congress drew a blank for the second consecutive time in the Delhi polls.
