Congress ignoring my grandson; Siddaramaiah is arrogant: Jaffer Sharief

Bengaluru Apr 1: Veteran Congress leader and former Railway Minister C K Jaffer Sharief has launched a fresh attack on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's style of functioning.

Sharief told reporters that Siddaramaiah was "high on arrogance" and that affairs in the state Congress had spiraled out of control. "It's like there's no high command. Only those with money have the command. The party is in the hands of those who don't know the Congress' culture," Sharief said.

The 84-year-old said he had no hopes of his grandson C K Abdul Rahman Sharief getting the party ticket for the upcoming Assembly polls. "No one has talked to me. Everyone has ignored," he rued.

Party tickets had been finalised for candidates belonging to one particular community, Sharief pointed out. "Varthur Prakash in Kolar, 'MTB' Nagaraj in Hoskote, Byrathi Basavaraj in KR Puram, Byrathi Suresh in Hebbal...if people from one community get priority, what will others get," Sharief asked, adding that there was "complete confusion" in the party.

Though he did not take the name of any particular community, all those whom he referred to belong to the Kuruba community.

Sharief also took exception to the government's decision to grant 'religious minority' status to the Lingayat community. "Government and religion are two different things. No government should interfere with religion. The way the government went about the Lingayat religion decision was wrong," Sharief said.

Bengaluru, Jun 20: Continuing with the easing of restrictions under 'Unlock 1.0', the Karnataka government on Saturday authorised local bodies to fix timing for opening of public parks other than those in the containment zones between 5 am to 9 pm.

It has also mandated adhering to all the national directives issued to contain the spread of COVID-19 and the guidelines issued by the state government in this connection.

Noting that the government has been relaxing conditions under unlock 1.0, Principal Secretary Revenue N Manjunath Prasad, who is also the member secretary of the state disaster management authority in an order said, local bodies have been asked to set the timing between 5 am to 9 pm to open all parks that come under them and the government.

It said this would be applicable to only those parks that come outside the containment zones. Earlier in May, while relaxing the lockdown norms, the government had set 7 am to 9 am and from 5 pm to 7 pm for the opening of parks.

Riyadh, July 6: The government of Saudi Arabia has announced health protocols to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus in the 2020 Hajj season, banning gatherings and meetings between pilgrims.

Saudi Arabia decided in June to limit the number of domestic pilgrims attending the Hajj to around 1,000 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, after barring pilgrims abroad from the rite for the first year in modern times.

Touching the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, will be banned during the Hajj this year, and a social distancing space of a meter and a half between each pilgrim during the rituals including mass prayers and while in the Kaaba circling area will be imposed, a statement by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) elaborated.

Also, access to holy Hajj sites at Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat will be limited to those with Hajj permits starting Sunday July 19 till Aug. 2 2020, and wearing masks all the time will be mandatory for both pilgrims and organisers.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Karnataka High Court, seeking a stay on Anand Singh functioning as Minister of Forests, Environment and Ecology contending that there are criminal cases filed against him by the Ministry.

"A stay be granted prohibiting Anand Singh from functioning as the Cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology. Any other order that the Honourable Court may deem fit in the interest of justice and equity," the PIL prays.

The petition, filed by advocate Vijay Kumar, said that the Chief Minister has allocated the portfolio of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology to Singh without considering the fact that there are several criminal faces filed against him by the Ministry.

It said that the allocation of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology portfolio to Singh is in the conflict of interest.

"The holding of the post of Cabinet minister for the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology is against public interest and completely in conflict of interest as he has business for which the subject Ministry is the overseeing authority and further he will also have access to the case files which again is in conflict of interest," the PIL said.

PIL adds that "it is pertinent and absolutely necessary" to deny the incumbent from accessing files related to his cases and from taking any decisions which may provide him with pecuniary benefits through his businesses.
