Couldn't imagine myself playing Dawood Ibrahim: Siddhanth

May 16, 2017

Mumbai, May 16: Actor Siddhanth Kapoor says when filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia first approached him to essay the role of Dawood Ibrahim in "Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai", he couldn't see himself playing the fugitive don.

siddhantSiddhanth's real life sibling and actress Shraddha Kapoor is playing the gangster's late sister Haseena Parkar in the film.

"I couldn't believe he (Apoorva) wanted me to play the part because I could not imagine playing someone like Dawood Ibrahim. Apoorva told me he has the trust that performance wise I will do it, but wanted me to convince him that I look that part," the actor said.

"So I did a test with a photographer friend of mine, took my dad's clothes from back in the days what he used to wear, his sun glasses and did a look test. When Apoorva saw it, he was blown away and said 'you are my Dawood Ibrahim'," Siddhanth says.

Siddhanth had to make sure his portrayal of the don was different as stars like Rishi Kapoor and Akshay Kumar have already played Dawood on the big screen in "D Day" and "Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara!", respectively.

"We had to keep it very different because so many of the senior actors have played it before, like Rishi sir, Sonu Sood, Akshay Kumar. So we had to use a body suit, put on a little weight, use prosthetics," he says.

"I am playing him in the film from the age of 17 to 40. No one has really seen him in any movie where he is young. We went through very intense workshops, read books, spoke to several people in the know. It was quite an experience preparing for the role," the actor says.

Siddhanth says as his father and actor Shakti Kapoor has played several iconic negative roles in films so he consulted him on how to go about the character.

"He (Shakti) told me how in the 70s and 80s people used to dress up, what was the style back then and the vibe within the industry.

"He gave his inputs because he used to play villain all the time. He told me how to play this subtle, dangerous yet stylish gangster," he says.

"Haseena" is scheduled to release this year.

Chennai, Mar 28: Chennai City Corporation personnel stuck a home quarantine sticker at the office of actor-politician Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam office on Saturday, leading to speculation that the matinee star was quarantined for the coronavirus.

While there was speculation if Kamal Haasan was quarantined, the Greater Chennai Corporation said their staffers pasted the sticker on the premises because actress Gautami Tadimalli "returned from Dubai recently and her passport has this address (Eldams Road in upscale Alwarpet)."

The present residence of the actress was not known immediately.

The sticker read, "We are in home quarantine to safeguard ourselves and Chennai from the coronavirus." It was removed soon, an official said, declining to elaborate.

Kamal Haasan clarified in a statement that he was not quarantined.

"Based on the notice stuck outside my house, news has been spread saying that I have been quarantined. But most of you already know that I have not been living there for the past few years and the Makkal Needhi Maiam party office has been functioning from there," he said.

Further, the actor said, the news that he has been quarantined "is not true."

As a precautionary measure, he has been maintaining social distancing, he said.

Mumbai, Jan 12: Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday came out in support of actor Deepika Padukone, who is facing flak from the BJP and some other quarters over her visit to the JNU campus in Delhi to express solidarity with students who were recently attacked by armed assailants.

Raut, who is a Rajya Sabha member and the executive editor of Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', said the country cannot be run in a "Talibani" style.

After Padukone's visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday, many appreciated her "silent solidarity", but some others criticised her for "supporting Leftists", saying it was a promotional stunt for her latest film "Chhapaak".

Some also demanded a boycott of her film, based on the life of an acid attack survivor, played by Padukone.

A section of BJP leaders also criticised the 34-year- old actor over her JNU visit.

Talking to PTI, Raut said, "The demand for boycott of the actress and her film is wrong. The country cannot be run in a 'Talibani' style."

"Chhapaak", directed by Meghna Gulzar, hit the theatres on Friday.

Declaring a movie tax-free means the state has waived the entertainment levy imposed on it, thereby bringing down the ticket rates and encouraging more people to watch it.

Mumbai, Jul 23: Mumbai Police will soon issue summons to actor Kangana Ranaut to record her statement in connection with the case related to the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, officials said on Thursday.

A day after Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide, Kangana Ranaut had released a two-minute video speaking highly of the deceased actor and accusing certain sections of the film industry of not acknowledging the star's talent.

She had also said that some of the last social media posts by the actor made it evident that he was struggling to survive in the industry.

According to the police, statements of 39 people, including film critic Rajeev Masand, director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and filmmaker Aditya Chopra have been recorded in the investigation so far.

The Mumbai Police had recently said the statements of three psychiatrists and one psychotherapist have been recorded in connection with the suicide investigation.
