Crackdown on Kashmiri separatists continues ahead of Article 35A hearing in SC

New Delhi, Feb 24: As India awaits the hearing on Article 35A with bated breath, Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces continued to crack down on Kashmiri separatists in the Valley, with as many as 150 of them being detained till Saturday, media reports said.

In the meantime, security forces kept on conducting nocturnal raids for the second consecutive day in Kashmir and people actively associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), besides clerics, were detained from South and North Kashmir.

JeI, which is a part of separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (an umbrella organisation of separatists), in a statement condemning the crackdown on Saturday said the police and other forces launched mass arrest during the intervening night of 22-23 February and raided many houses and dozens of central and district level leaders were arrested. “The move is a well-designed conspiracy to pave way for further uncertainty in the region.”

The overnight raids on Saturday-Sunday saw choppers hovering over Srinagar for the second consecutive night and station house officers across Valley have been told to identify people who have links with Jamaat and Hurriyat and detain them.

The detentions and arrests come two days ahead of the likely hearing of Article 35A in Supreme Court on Monday (February 25). The provision included in the Indian Constitution in 1954 grants special rights and privileges to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Among those who were detained on Saturday include JeI chief Abdul Hamid Fayaz, Advocate Zahid Ali (spokesperson), Ghulam Qadir Lone (former secretary general), Abdur Rouf (Ameer, Zila Islamabad), Mudasir Ahmad (Ameer, Pahalgam Tehsil), Abdul Salam (Dialgam), Bakhtawar Ahmad (Dialgam), Mohammad Hayat (Tral), Bilal Ahmad (Chadoora), Ghulam Mohammad Dar (Chak Sangran) and dozens more.

New Delhi, May 12: A total of 12 special evacuation flights from across the globe will bring home stranded Indians on the sixth day of 'Vande Bharat Mission' on Tuesday.

The special flights include Air India flight from Manila to Ahmedabad, London to Hyderabad, Newark-Mumbai-Ahmedabad, AI flight from Singapore to Delhi, AI flight from Dhaka to Srinagar, Dammam to Kochi, Kuala Lumpur to Mumbai, Manila to Delhi, Muscat to Chennai, Dubai to Kannur, Dubai to Mangalore and Singapore-Bengaluru-Kochi.

Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, India is conducting 'Vande Bharat' Mission -- its biggest ever repatriation exercise since independence -- to bring back stranded Indians from abroad, including from the US, the UAE and the UK.

On the fifth day of Vande Bharat Mission, as many as 1,667 Indian nationals were repatriated from different countries in eight special flights.

New Delhi, May 23: India witnessed the biggest ever spike of 6,654 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,25,101, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As many as 137 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,720.
Out of the total number of cases, 69,597 are active and 51,784 have been cured/discharged or have migrated.

Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state with 44,582 COVID-19 cases. It is followed by Tamil Nadu (14,753), Gujarat (13,268), and Delhi (12,319).

The nationwide lockdown imposed as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19 has been extended till May 31.

New Delhi, May 31: India registered its highest single-day spike of COVID-19 cases on Sunday with 8,380 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, taking the country's tally to 1,82,143, while the death toll rose to 5,164, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood to 89,995, while 86,983 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, it said.

"Thus, around 47.75 per cent patients have recovered so far," a senior health ministry official said.

The total confirmed cases include foreigners.

The death toll has gone up by 193 since Saturday morning, of which 99 were from Maharashtra, 27 from Gujarat, 18 from Delhi, nine each from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, seven from West Bengal, six each from Tamil Nadu and Telangana, five in Bihar, three from Uttar Pradesh, two from Punjab, and one each from Haryana and Kerala.
