Journalist turned manager Smita Rao found hanging at home

Bangalore, November 28: An assistant manager with Infosys Ltd was found hanging in her apartment in a suburb here, police said Monday.

Smita Rao, 32, was found hanging Monday in her apartment in the northeast suburb of Geddelihalli. Rao, a former journalist, leaves behind her husband Rohit.

"Smita Rao was found hanging in her flat (E4) on the third floor of Mantri Splendour apartments. She was rushed to a private hospital but was declared dead. A case of unnatural death by hanging will be registered after we get the post-mortem report from the hospital," Hennur police station inspector G. Prabhakar told reporters.

According to Columbia Asia hospital general manager Jermy D’Souza, Smita was brought to the hospital in an ambulance from the flat but could not be treated as doctors found her dead when she was wheeled into the emergency ward.

“On receiving an emergency call from Mantri apartments at Geddelihalli, we rushed an ambulance to bring the victim at the earliest. Before our doctors could attend to her, she was found dead,” D’Souza said.

Smita, who joined Infosys in June 2010 was handling online content for the company’s official website, providing corporate updates and writing business stories and features.

Infosys did not respond to calls and its officials were unavailable for comment on the incident involving one of its employees.

Before shifting to the corporate world, Smita was deputy city editor at Bangalore Mirror, a popular tabloid in this tech hub, from July 2007 to September 2008 and a senior correspondent with The Times of India, Bangalore edition, from February 2004 to April 2007.

Prior to joining Infosys, she went to Milan, Italy, on a teaching fellowship for 10 months from October 2008 to July 2009.

In between, she worked as a television reporter with News 9, an English channel of the TV9 group.

Kota (Rajasthan), Jun 6: A 14-year-old boy allegedly hanged himself to death on early Saturday morning shortly after he stopped playing PUBG throughout the night and went to sleep, said police. 

Railway Colony police station’s in-charge Hansraj Meena said the boy, a class 9 student and son of an Army man, was found hanging from the grill of the ventilator in his bedroom on early Saturday morning. 

Meena said according to the boy’s family members, the boy had downloaded the gaming programme on his mother’s mobile phone only three days back but had been playing the game virtually continuously for the last three days. 

He kept on playing the game till 3 am in a room in which his brother was studying, said Meena, adding the boy went to adjoining to sleep after that. His body was found hanging from the ventilator’s grill in the morning, he said, adding the boy was rushed to MBS Hospital, where he was declared “brought dead”. 

No suicide note was recovered in the case, the SHO said. The boy lived in Gandhi Colony in the city along with his mother and brother, while his father, a Tamil Nadu native and Army man, is currently posted in Arunachal Pradesh. The boy’s body has been kept in hospital’s morgue for the postmortem, the SHO said.

Mumbai, May 10: A 32-year old man, running a bakery here has been arrested for alleged promotion of products using a tagline that said his firm does not employ Muslims, police said on Sunday.

The man, who is also selling his products online had allegedly said "made by Jains on orders, no Muslim staff" for promotion purposes in his WhatApp group.

A complaint was lodged against him saying the words depicted Muslims in a bad light and Mambalam police registered a case and arrested him, a release said adding a probe was on.

Recently, a man was arrested in Mumbai after he allegedly refused to collect groceries he had ordered online since the delivery person was a Muslim.

Thane, Jul 19: A 34-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly killing his wife after picking up a fight as he did not like the food she cooked, Thane police said.

Sachin Godane, a resident of Gaikwad Pada in Ambernath, locked his two children and an aunt in one room of the house on Friday afternoon and brutally beat up his wife Chandrakala (28) with a log and then strangled her, said Assistant Inspector JB Bhoyer of Shivajinagar police station.

Godane has been remanded in police custody for four days, he added.
