Shreya Verma, a private company employee and resident of Old Madras Road, and her friend, Gaurav Sharma, also a private company employee and resident of Banashankari, were on their way towards Garuda Mall. The duo had plans to shop for the wedding of Shreya's cousin when their two-wheeler ran into the autorickshaw. The autorickshaw driver, R Ramesh, also stood in their path. Gaurav asked Ramesh to make away but the latter replied with a punch on Gaurav's face. Shreya immediately went to her friend's rescue only to be slapped and abused by Ramesh.

Ramesh continued to rain blows on Gaurav. Shreya saw two policemen approaching, ran up to them and asked for help. The constables, attached to the Wilson Garden police station, wasted no time and rushed to Gaurav's help. "Immediately, we took the erring driver into our custody and filed a case on him," Anil Kumar, inspector, Wilson Garden told TOI. "I was riding to the extreme left and requested Ramesh to give way. Instead, he abused and attacked me," Gaurav told TOI.

Shreya decided to intervene thinking that the arrogant driver may come to his senses while dealing with a woman. "But I was wrong. He not only attacked me, but also used filthy language. That's when I decided to teach him a lesson," Shreya said.

New Delhi, May 9: A 23-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide at the AIIMS here after her mother died of cancer at the hospital, police said on Saturday.

She was reported missing after her mother passed away on Wednesday and her body was found near the new private ward block of the hospital on Saturday, they said, adding that she fell to her death from a building.

"Her mother was a cancer patient. She was being treated at the hospital and had died during treatment on Wednesday," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said.

Her father was busy in the formalities when she left the area. She was reported missing since Wednesday. The family hails from Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police officer said.

Hospital staff noticed the body and informed the police. The block was closed due to which nobody found out about it earlier, police said.

Police said she had called her friends and told them that she was going to kill herself. The body has been recovered and an inquest proceeding is underway.

May 11: Two youths allegedly gang-raped a teen and then hacked to death her 11-year old brother, who had seen their act, in a bid to hide their crime, at a village in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district, about 300 kilometres from here.

Police sources said that two youths, resident of the same village, barged into the house of the teen, when she was alone, and allegedly gang-raped her.

The victim's minor brother suddenly came into the house and protested after he witnessed his sister being sexually assaulted, sources said. The youths allegedly strangled the minor with a towel.

The alleged culprits, who hailed from influential families, 'forced' the victim's parents to bury their son and warned them against approaching the cops.

The parents, however, gathered courage and met senior police officials in Etah on Sunday after a case was registered in this regard. Police said that the body of the minor would be exhumed and a postmortem examination would be conducted.
