Mysore, December 17: The six-year-old school girl, who had been admitted for burns after falling into a piping hot sambar, succumbed at a hospital here on Friday.

Apoorva B was a second standard student at the Government Higher Primary School in Katte Hunsur in HD?Kote taluk in the district. She was standing in a queue for ‘bisi oota’ at her school on December 14 at 12.45 pm, when the accident occurred.

Apoorva had tripped and fallen into the sambar container when a girl standing behind her rushed ahead. Ravichandra, a teacher accompanied by headmaster Srinivas, cooks and others somehow managed to lift Apoorva from the container and shifted her to a primary health centre in Hullahalli. On the advice of the doctor at the PHC, she had been shifted to KR?Hospital in Mysore for further treatment. However, the girl breathed her last on Friday.

Zilla panchayat chief executive officer G?Satyavathy, who met the girl’s mother Mahadevi, handed over an exgratia of Rs 30,000 from Teachers Cooperative Association.

Satyavathy told Deccan Herald that she has written to the primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri as there were no guidelines over issuing relief to relatives of the deceased in such cases.

The mother of the girl has been given a job at the same school as cook. For laxity, the headmaster and three cooks have been suspended, the officer added.

This follows a report from a team of nine officers led by Narasimhaiah, who had been entrusted with the task of investigating into the incident.?According to the report submitted, the kitchen staff at the school had kept the hot container of food items nearby while serving the food. Instead they could have arranged for serving the food at the vast space available on the premises, with small vessels to serve the food.

Moreover, no teacher was assigned the job of supervising the process at that time.

Heartrending scenes were witnessed at the village at the time of the funeral of the girl. Director of Akshara Dasoha B?G?Nayak said chief minister and the legislators have expressed their condolences over the incident. He promised that necessary assistance would be given to the mother of the deceased.

For Mahadevi, her daughter’s death was a double blow. When her husband Basavashetty deserted her, she returned to her parent’s place along with her son Abhishek and daughter Apoorva.

She had been working as a daily wager. Abhishek is studying in the same school where the tragedy struck.

Waking up to the gravity of the situation, the zilla panchayat chief executive officer has issued some guidelines to be followed henceforth to check recurrence of such incidents. The food cooked in kitchen should be brought outside in smaller vessels for serving. Kitchen should be declared a prohibited area.

Two teachers have to be deputed for supervision. The kitchen staff should wear clothes that are fire resistant and phone numbers to be contacted at the time of exigency should be prominently displayed. Also, students should not be engaged in any labour.

Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha President Ranjit Bachchan was shot dead on Sunday because of an extra-marital relationship of his second wife.

Lucknow Police Commissioner Sujit Pandey said at a press conference here on Thursday that Ranjit Bachchan's second wife Smriti Srivastava, her paramour Dipendra and driver Sanjit Gautam have been arrested in connection with the case. All three were held on Thursday, while the shooter -- Jitendra -- is yet to be arrested.

Pandey said that Smriti wanted a divorce from Ranjit Bachchan and their case was pending in the family court since 2016. While she was keen to marry Dipendra, Ranjit Bachchan was unwilling to leave her.

"On January 17, Ranjit had met Smriti and even slapped her, which became the provocation for the murder," he said.

The Police Commissioner said that during investigation, the police had probed all possible angles, including a terror angle.

"We found there were no financial disputes, no property disputes and no terror angle to the case. It emerged that Smriti had an affair with Dipendra and wanted to leave Ranjit Bachchan, who had four criminal cases against him. Through technical and electronic surveillance, we found the connection between Smriti, Dipendra, driver Sanjit and the shooter Jitendra," he said.

Ranjeet Bachchan, 40, who had founded the Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha, was shot in the head on Sunday morning while his brother Aditya Srivastava was injured in the attack by the assailant who also snatched their mobile phones.

The attacker had covered himself in a shawl and was on foot. The police had released CCTV footages showing a suspect and announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for providing information.

Four police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were suspended for alleged laxity and a case was registered at the Hazratganj po

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 5: One man has been arrested in connection with the death of a pregnant elephant in Palakkad district here, Kerala Forest Minister K Raju said on Friday.

"One accused identified as Wilson has been arrested in connection with the case. More people are involved. The process to arrest all the accused is underway. Strict action will be taken in the matter to ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future," Raju told reporters here.

The elephant had died in Palakkad district on May 27 after it ate a pineapple stuffed with crackers and forest officials said that it died standing in river Velliyar after it suffered an injury in its lower jaw.

Raju said that the forest department has appointed three teams to probe the matter, and added that police are also investigating the incident as explosives were used.

"There may be some type of crackers inside the fruit. In such cases, blast occurs and the animal can not even drink water. The primary post mortem reports said that this case is like that. Let it be investigated," he said.

"Man and animal conflict is natural in our state as people residing close to the forests. The government gives compensation for farmers, Rs 10 lakhs compensation if a person dies in an animal attack," the Minister added.

The death of the pregnant elephant has sparked a controversy, with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan terming the unfortunate death as "a painful thing" and Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar saying that the Centre has taken a "serious note" of the incident.

According to the preliminary post-mortem report, the immediate cause of the death of the female elephant was drowning followed by inhalation of water leading to lung failure.

The elephant was seen standing in the river with its mouth and trunk in the water for some relief from the pain after the explosive-filled fruit exploded in its mouth.
