Woman duped

Two persons who identified themselves as policemen duped a woman of her valuables in Shivajinagar police limits Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police, N Neela, a resident of Hosur Road, along with her relative alighted from a bus at Queen’s Road junction.

The two were to visit one of their relatives, who is admitted to a hospital, on Cunningham Road.

They walked towards the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office, as they were unable to locate the hospital. They approached two middle-aged men seeking directions, the police said.

The men who claimed to be police said there was tension near the hospital as violence had broken out.

They suggested Neela to remove all her valuables and place it in a bag, as it was unsafe to head towards the hospital adorned with jewels.

Neela removed her two gold bangles and a gold chain worth Rs one lakh and kept it in her bag.

Taking due advantage of their gullibility, the men demanded that the bag be handed over to them.

However, when Neela refused to hand over her bag, the men told they had orders from higher officials to check bags creating suspicion.

As the argument progressed, the men diverted their attention, stole the valuables and fled leaving behind the bag, the police added.

After convincing her that they were CID police they informed her that there was some violence in Kalasipalya.

They asked her to remove her gold chain and hand it over to them, so that they could wrap it in a piece of paper and return the same.

The West Bengal government has suspended two women teachers in East Burdwan district on the charge of teaching pre-primary students from an English alphabet book consisting of a portion derogatory to the people with a dark complexion.

While presenting the alphabets with corresponding words and images, the book says U is for "Ugly". The illustration printed beside the letter is that of a boy with a dark complexion.

"The book is not part of the textbooks referred by the education department. It was introduced by the school itself. We have zero-tolerance for acts which instil prejudices into the minds of students," Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters here on Thursday.

He said the two teachers of a local municipality-run school have been placed under suspension with immediate effect based on a preliminary investigation and stricter action would be taken against them later.

Though the school is now closed because of the lockdown, the matter came to light when the father of a student of the school was teaching him with the help of that book. He informed other parents and the education department was apprised of the issue, sources said.

Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha President Ranjit Bachchan was shot dead on Sunday because of an extra-marital relationship of his second wife.

Lucknow Police Commissioner Sujit Pandey said at a press conference here on Thursday that Ranjit Bachchan's second wife Smriti Srivastava, her paramour Dipendra and driver Sanjit Gautam have been arrested in connection with the case. All three were held on Thursday, while the shooter -- Jitendra -- is yet to be arrested.

Pandey said that Smriti wanted a divorce from Ranjit Bachchan and their case was pending in the family court since 2016. While she was keen to marry Dipendra, Ranjit Bachchan was unwilling to leave her.

"On January 17, Ranjit had met Smriti and even slapped her, which became the provocation for the murder," he said.

The Police Commissioner said that during investigation, the police had probed all possible angles, including a terror angle.

"We found there were no financial disputes, no property disputes and no terror angle to the case. It emerged that Smriti had an affair with Dipendra and wanted to leave Ranjit Bachchan, who had four criminal cases against him. Through technical and electronic surveillance, we found the connection between Smriti, Dipendra, driver Sanjit and the shooter Jitendra," he said.

Ranjeet Bachchan, 40, who had founded the Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha, was shot in the head on Sunday morning while his brother Aditya Srivastava was injured in the attack by the assailant who also snatched their mobile phones.
