MRPL vehicle knocks down motorcyclist; Localites stage protest

Mangalore, January 29: A motorcyclist was killed on spot when a speeding tipper belonging to MSEZ project knocked him down at Jokatte near here on Friday night.

The deceased has been identified as Abdul Salam (30), a resident of Jokatte. The incident occurred when the Salam was on his way home.

A case has been registered against the trailer driver at Panambur police station.

Following the accident, around 200 angry local residents gathered at entrance of MRPL cargo gate near Suratkal and shouted slogans against company. They said that the reckless driving on part of MRPL vehicle driver was the reason behind the accident.

Accusing the MRPL of killing innocent people, the agitators stopped all vehicles moving in to MRPL third phase project for some time. A couple of vehicles were damaged by the protesters.

Suratkal police, who rushed to the spot, dispersed the mob through a mild baton charge. The police also took around 20 people into their custody.

Behrampur, Jun 7: A migrant labourer spent two days in jungle after allegedly being denied entry to a quarantine centre and his village in Behrampur.

According to a local from the village, no one helped the labourer. "He came from Chennai. He went to the police and block office but no one helped. Then, he went to the jungle."

Later, the police took him to the quarantine centre.

As per the Union Health Ministry, there are 2,608 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Odisha, including 996 active cases, 1,604 recovered/discharged/migrated and 8 deaths.

New Delhi, Jan 2: A 20-year-old man set his motorcycle on fire after he was challaned by the traffic police in south Delhi's Greater Kailash area on Wednesday, police said.

Vikas, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was challaned by the traffic police for riding the motorcycle without helmet, a senior police official said.

The traffic police challaned him and impounded the motorcycle, following which Vikas set the bike on fire, the officer said.

A case has been registered and the accused arrested, the officer added.

Panipat, Mar 3: A 22-year-old man was charred to death after he came in contact with a live electricity wire while posing for a TikTok video near the Matlaudha railway station here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday evening when Vikas, a resident of Dharamgarh village, climbed a pole over which the wire was passing and posed for the video, police said.

His three friends were standing below when the accident took place.

Vikas came in contact with the wire carrying 25,000 volts current and was burnt, police said.

Police have sent the body for a post-mortem and started investigation into the matter.
