Boyfriend, 4 others rape 19-yr-old after spiking her drink

Chennai, February 9: Police have arrested four college students and launched a hunt for another student for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman after spiking her drinks at a party. The arrested include the woman's boyfriend K Sivanandan (19) of Anakaputhur.

Police said Sivanandan, a first year hotel management student of a private college in the city, had taken the woman to a friend's place Sunday evening where she passed out after having drinks. He dropped her at her place Monday morning after he and his friends allegedly raped her. The woman, a salesgirl in a supermarket, has been admitted to a government hospital in Egmore with bleeding injuries. She is now stable, doctors said.

The incident came to light when the doctors treating her found signs of rape. They informed police on Tuesday. Following this, Sankar Nagar police inspector M Christopher got the woman's statement in the presence of the doctors. Joint commissioner of police (south zone) K P Shanmuga Rajeswaran said, "Sivanandan lured his girlfriend and took her to his friend Arvind Santhosh's house in Anakaputhur. The accused apparently spiked her drinks and raped her." The others arrested are Santhosh (19), an engineering student, Hariharan (19), a first year polytechnic student, and Deepan Kumar (18), a first year BTech student. A search is on for their friend Navin (19), a first year engineering student.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 10: The man who fled from the Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 committed suicide on Wednesday morning after being brought back. He used his bed sheet to hang himself from the ceiling.

Hailing from Anad near Nedumangadu, the man, who was undergoing treatment in the isolation room set up at KHRWS pay ward, escaped from the hospital and boarded two KSRTC buses to reach his home.

The Health Department had said the latest tests had returned negative and he was to be discharged on Wednesday. However, City Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyay had claimed that one more test result of the person was awaited.

The man was blocked by locals upon his arrival at Anad. He was later taken back to the hospital and the police had registered a case against him under the Kerala Public Health Act and Epidemic Diseases Ordinance.

Bengaluru, May 6: Central Crime Branch Police have nabbed 71 people involved in various crimes taking advantage of Lock-down which prevents movement of people in the street and seized stolen properties worth about Rs 1.70 crore, official said on Wednesday.

Police said that in all 56 cases were booked. In all 17,312 duplicate Sanitisers, 2000 lts of Chemicals, 18,750 fake Masks, 270 Thermometers and two cars were seized from the arrested culprits.

During the raid godowns where rice and dal meant for free distribution during lock-down were robbed and stored were also seized.

Vijayawada, Aug 9: The number of those killed in the fire at a hotel being used as a COVID-19 facility in Vijayawada rose to 10 on Sunday, said Vikrant Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government announced Rs 50 lakh ex-gratia each to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.

According to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also ordered an in-depth probe into the accident and directed authorities to take steps to ensure better medical services to the victims of the accident.

"The hotel was taken on lease and run by Ramesh Hospitals, a private hospital where COVID-19 patients were being treated. 40 patients and 10 medical staff were at the hotel at the time of the incident. 

Officials were directed to launch immediate rescue measures," said Mekathoti Sucharitha, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of the lives in the fire mishap and spoke to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy over the phone and enquired about the accident.

The mishap took place in hotel Swarna Palace which was taken on lease and run by a private hospital for COVID patients.
