Panaji, February 18: More than a dozen school children and their woman escort were feared drowned Saturday after a school bus carrying them drove straight into a river in Goa, police said.
The incident took place when the brakes of the bus failed and it plunged into Calvi river, 30 km from here.
Indian Navy divers have rushed to the spot, a police officer said.
Police said they did not have the exact number of children on board the bus.
“Three bodies were taken out from the bus. One is of a middle-aged woman and two are minor children,” a police official said from the Mapusa police station.
According to witnesses, there were around 20 children in the bus, and they were screaming after the bus ran off the ferry ramp into the Calvi river.
“The driver jumped off somehow and ran away,” said Agustino D’Souza, a witness.

The gruesome incident took place on January 21 and the accused, Yogilal Rahangdale (52), was arrested from Gondia district, they said.

The accused was working as a supervisor in a spinning mill where the woman was employed as a labourer, the police said.
